Default Thoughts on Hornady Leverevolution ammo

So has anyone ever tried any of the Hornady Leverevolution. I'm wondering if it's the way to go in some lever guns

I concur with West
Shoots fantastic out of our Marlin 3030 and also our 45/70 guide gun. It's too bad you can't buy the bullets and reload them
Very good product and worth the $$$$$ if you don't reload.

Thats not quite true. Hornady makes the FTX bullets for reloading which are the ones they use in their leverevolution ammo. The selection isn't as great as traditional but they do make them for 30-30, 35 rem, 444marlin 45-70/450marlin as well as the 308 & 338 marlin express, 357mag and 44mag. They may be hard to find but they do make them. Check their website.

I've not used them but the guys on the Marlin forum noted that the 444 ammo is not always great in the older 1-38" twist microgroove barrels. The guys with the newer cut rifling 1-20" speak highly of the ammo.

I still wonder how flexible that tip would be at -30. Say on a buffalo hunt. Would it be hard enough to be dangerous?

I purchased a box of Leverevolution in .444 and 30-30. Put them both in the freezer overnite and the tips were still as flexible as they are at ambient temp. Accuracy wise, I found them no better than standard Winchester ammo, same goes for muzzle velocity. They might have a velocity advantage downrange due to higher BC than standard flat nose, but I'm not shooting through my chrono at 200. FTX's are available for reloaders but I have yet to see them on the shelf here. I'd like to try some.

A really good point. You should contact Hornady and see if they would sponsor you in doing some cold weather field testing of their product. You could hunt Bison at Rainbow lake and then Muskox, Polar bear and walrus in the Arctic, all with their ammo to see how it works on field conditions.

I expect they took that into consideration as it would be a HUGE liability not to.

All I know about it is that I would love to get my paws on a couple boxes in 32 Win Special and introduce it to my moose this fall and maybe a deer or 2!!

I know of tons of people that have had great accuracy with shooting this ammo. However my father bought a box of 45/70 and tried shooting it through his Ruger #1 and had terrible success. He had a tough time keeping a 6” group @ 100 yards. I am not sure why but this gun absolutely hated it. He is the only person I know of having poor results with it. Has anyone else tried this in a 45/70 Ruger #1?

kind of a side note.. how hard is it to find the Leverevolution ammo in alberta? I'm going to school down in WA state and I can find the stuff fairly easily. A box of 30-30 I can find for around 19$/box

Do they make it in 32 Win Special? I have model 94 in 32 win special so if they do I want to buy some and give it a try. I've just been using Federal in it and like it but I'd really like to give the Hornady a go in it.

no kidin', they do however have a good selection of paint ball ammo & T-shirts. Give Udo a call at Flys Etc. in High River (601-6120). He brings in all my reloading components usually in 2-3 days.

I haven't had a chance to look yet. It's the week of my birthday so I've been running around like a headless chicken.......... Had to organize a family BBQ at my lake cabin this last weekend and some other family events this whole week.

Aint that the truth. Thanks for the tip. I checked proline today and no lever evolution in 3030 there either. Oh Russells......where are you now??

Anyone know if there are any UFAs to try in Calgary?

Nope all the UFA's in Calgary are closed, just phoned there last week. There is one in Strathmore and Airdire and a couple other out-lying towns, just cant remember which ones.
Are you looking for any 30/30 ammo or just the Hornady stuff?

Well I just checked all of the Wholesale sports stores and none of them have any in 32 Win spl Hornady right now, when they do it's $25.00 a box and they have no idea when they'll get some in. I guess it's time to try some of the other stores to see if they have any
