Default CWD Testing Wait Times

Kicking this thread off in case there's interest in tracking how long test turnaround is throughout the season.

I dropped off my sample at the Cochrane freezer October 28th and just got my results in email today. 15 days total.

Deer steaks are on the menu tonight.

On a related topic, from the autopsy report released on Fernando Valenzuela the former Dodger great, it seems he suffered from CJD, the human version of chronic wasting disease. Here is some interesting information as to how people can become infected without eating infected meat.

The normal, harmless prion protein is usually designated as PrPC ("C" stands for cellular) and the abnormal, infectious form (which causes the disease) is PrPSc ("Sc" stands for prototypical prion disease–scrapie).

In the acquired form of the disease, the infectious PrPSc comes from the outside the body, for example, through contaminated meat as is seen in variant CJD.
In the hereditary form, infectious prions can arise when a mutation occurs in the gene for the body's normal prion protein. As the mutated PrPC duplicates itself, it spontaneously changes shape into the infectious form. (Prions themselves do not contain genetic information and do not require genes to reproduce themselves.) If the prion protein gene is changed in a person's sperm or egg cells, the changed gene can be transmitted to the person's children. Specific changes found in each family affects how often the disease appears and what symptoms are most noticeable. However, not all people with mutations in the prion protein gene develop CJD.
In the sporadic form, the infectious prions are believed to be made by an error in the cell's machinery that makes proteins and controls their quality. These errors are more likely to occur with aging.

Must be tough going without your head for a week or two.

All kidding aside, these are really good turnaround times compared to previous years. Still not fast enough to save the butchering costs, but at least it isn't 4 to 6 months.

I made some jerky and the loins into roast and froze them. And then froze the rest in chunks in large ziplock bags. I’ll thaw it out later and make it into sausage and smoke it. It’ll be handy having the deck as a blast chiller in December.

***Sarcasm alert***
To the guy that always has to say “you can’t thaw and refreeze meat”, yes, yes you can. It will have some water come out, it’s best to cook it before re freezing. I’ve done it plenty of times and always tastes good. I’m such a talented guy that I can add pork and fat to it then wrap it in butcher paper and it won’t get freezer burned 11 months later…. I don’t even need a vacuum sealer like the guys on YouTube say you do.

Results took about 3 weeks . Positive unfortunately. We've already eaten tender loins . May make all into sausage . Waiting till cow elk season is over to decide . All wrapped or in bags . 310 zone

I shot a doe Nov 28, when I went to drop. Off the head the freezer was empty.
Dang! Just missed it. You’d think they’d wait until a week after the season ends to empty those freezers?

If you’re concerned about eating the meat because of the disease, processing into sausage won’t change the situation in that regard.

MD, WT?
Buck,Doe?

As has been said, cooking the meat will have no effect on the prions.
Might as well eat it raw if you will eat it as sausage.
Or do you add a secret spice?

I dropped mine off on Nov. 28th in South Calgary. Freezer was completely empty that morning too. I was thinking the same thing..... maybe they're emptying it daily???

Seems that CWD in the Calgary area is only in MD, so far.

It's probably a lot more than you'd think. My buck wasn't mandatory last year, but I got him tested anyway. Lots of people were hunting in the area. He tested positive. He looked nice and healthy.

I don’t hunt the mandatory areas but I’m thinking I’ll get it tested every year now that I tried it and it was easy. Yeah it will add more volume to the testing but the only way to know where it is, is by testing where we think it isn’t.
