Default Epic Hunting Trip to South Africa

From March 27 - April 3, 2024, my sons (River and Reuben), brother-in-law (Nathan), friend (Chris) and myself went on an amazing hunting trip with Ngili Safaris north of Kimberly, in South Africa. My son took his camera equipment and drone, and captured tons of footage.

The number and quality of animals we saw was outstanding and the hospitality and accommodations went above and beyond. We shot red hartebeest, gemsbok, springbok, blesbok, blue and black wildebeest, sable, impala, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, steenbok, jackal, African porcupine, fallow deer and a cape buffalo. My older son even shot a springbok grand slam...in one day...all on video.

If you watch the video, you will notice a few spots with a high fence in the background. Where we were in South Africa, all of the game hunting is done on large private land game farms - the high fence is a way of managing genetics for superior quality animals and deterring the locals from poaching. We shot some amazing animals - a 41" gemsbok, a 51" kudu and a giant white springbok...it was a hunters paradise. Being on private land, we were also able to hunt warthogs from a helicopter and night hunt for steenbok, jackal and porcupine.

If you have ever though of hunting South Africa, we would highly recommend Ngili Safaris (contact information in video).

Pretty cool video. Question- what did you do with carcasses?
And another question- the place was fenced off you said, so how big are the hunting grounds? Didn’t you feel like you are hunting in a zoo? I am not judging by any means, just really curious what it was like.

There are a lot of concessions that are so large that it definitely doesn’t make a difference if there is a fence. I think the fences are more about keeping trespassers and poachers off of the property.
An African hunt is really something special to experience. I would love to go back for a Dugga Boy.

Congrats on your excellent trophies. Africa is an addiction, you'll be back before you know it.

If you go to on a South African hunt you really need to research your outfitter/PH and the concessions they hunt.

yes, there are many "Shooting up a petting Zoo" operations. Many that just park you in a blind at a water hole everyday and you pick from the menu as it were.

on the other hand, there are many massive concessions, that although fenced, will give you a great hunting experience. On my trip I was the only hunter on 18,000 fenced Acres. The animals were very wild, and the spot & stalk hunting exceptional.

The fences are essential to keep poachers out.

What did you guys do with the meat? Did you have a chance to try any? Could you keep any trophy heads?

I had a great PH, and in our many pre-hunt discussions I requested that there me no pomp or luxury, I wanted to hunt as the locals hunt, and that we eat a bit of every critter I shot. He provided for both of these conditions perfectly.

"Wild" meat is sold at every butcher shop in SA. Biltong and a cold Stoney is essential road trip food. The game animals you shoot are trucked away and usually processed immediately.

My heads are on the wall at home. That's an entirely different gong-show getting them home though. another aspect of a foreign hunt where it pays to do your homework and use a good agent.

Sorry for the long delay in responding to your question KGB.

I would echo what Samik said....they use ALL of the meat from the animals, and I mean ALL. The carcasses are sold in the local butcher shops and the skinners/trackers make quick work of the heart/liver/stomach/intestines.

The lodge we stayed at had an amazing cook, so we got to try every type of animal we shot. Zebra schnitzel, warthog sausage, roasted sprinkbok shank, kudu loin, etc.. It was all amazing and tasted very much like our wild game.

The hunt was in March/April and the taxidermy work should be getting completed in the next few weeks. Getting it back could be an adventure

Simply awesome trip!
Just being able to eat all of those different animals must have been an incredible experience , let alone the hunting!

That is an unbelievable safari. We went to SA on a farm tour, it was something, this tops it by a mile. Thanks for the pics, videos, and write-up!

That’s pretty cool, I would love to try all of these meats at least once in a lifetime… But I don’t think I will be heading to SA any time soon, lol!
