Repeating Elevator Live Bird - Sparrow Trap

Has anyone made one if so I would appreciate all the measurements for board pieces , balance beam length , basket at end etc . I'm considering trying to make one if I have the plywood pieces & can get the time to do it which probably would be cheaper than buying one . If I have to purchase one where would the best place to get one . Have to thin out these buggers . Also do they actually work , I'm in the city so an air gun is out of the question . Any information appreciated

I found some plans on the internet somewhere for it and built one. Never caught a single house sparrow - they wouldn't enter it. The chickadees flew straight through to the feed platform and never landed on the elevator. Caught lots of grosbeaks and a few juncos.

I’m in town and don’t have a ton of sparrows, but they have taken over swallow houses in my yard. This one is more nesting driven as you will see. I would think for larger numbers and more year round use the previous would be better, but just my opinion. I suspect proper “tuning” for weight of the bird is key. I’ve released swallows and chickadees, so important to be around if the trap is out. I grew up on a grain farm and I remember having a funnel style trap on top of a grain dryer that sometimes had 1/2 dozen or more at a time.

We had this trap when I was a kid. It worked amazing on sparrows. A bit of bird seed in the top tipping platform and we’d have a dozen or multiple dozen by days end in there.

Not sure where you can get one here, but may be an easy project with an old bird cage from a garage sale and a bit of sheet metal to make the top and tipping platform. It was just a small platform with a seed holder dish for the birds to try to land on that would then tip away under their weight and drop them in the cage below. So simple, and very effective.
