Fishing tips lake Minnewanka backcountry camping

Hi
I'm camping at L9 or L10 for a few days in mid august with some friends. I'm not much of a fisherman but it would be fun to try to catch something - maybe even supper. One friend may be brining a canoe, if not I'll be on the shore.
I have some odds and ends when it comes to rods and tackle. What exactly should I bring if I'm hoping to catch a lake trout? Any chance from shore or do I pretty much need to hope for the canoe?

Lake trout will be down deep. 60-100 feet.

Jig with legal lures made for lakers.

Check the regs as the parks are unique.

There are some whitefish along shore so have a fly rod or spinning rod with a float and flies.

Thanks. Sounds like a boat would be best. Do I have any chance at all casting from shore?

Not likely for Lakers in august. They will be out deep. We fished it last august for a day and got skunked. Could mark them out deep in 70+ feet but nothing would eat. We jigged and trolled 100 different presentations with downriggers. Didn't see the guide boats catch anything either so didn't feel too bad.

NO Lead under 2oz in that lake. Be very careful of that.

Its amazing to fish in those surroundings. Soak it all in. Have fun.

When I lived in Canmore years ago I would go to lake minnewanka and fish off shore for Lakers. Caught them often but most were 1-3lbs and biggest was maybe 6lbs. I don’t think I ever caught more than a few fish in a day but I did catch at least 1 most days

Heavy spoons toss them out and let them sink. Points and anywhere with a deep drop off.

If in a canoe stay close to shore cause if the weather kicks up and it can in a hurry you don't want no part of it. We use to troll (downrigger) in pretty much 80ft of water and also using white jigs for jigging. As mentioned do not have any lead under a certain size. Even if your not using it, don't have it in your tackle box. Read the reg's. We use to camp at the far end by the gap, many many many years ago. Two boats and a 12 ft'r in tow with all the gear.
