Post Looking for info on hunting moose on the liard river in the NWT

I am planning a trip for moose on the Laird river on the 30 of Sept for a week. I will have some time this coming weekend to go scout out the area for a few days. Has anyone hunted this area? Is the river deep enough for a 16 foot and 25 horse? Any help or direction will be really appreciated. I figure it will be a 7 hour drive from High Level and this is the longest in advanced i have ever planned a hunt. I have guest travelling about two thousand miles to come for the hunt and i don't want to disappoint.

that river is wide deep and fast, i wouldnt go wth a 25 horse motor or a 16 foot boat ,I,d want more like a 20 or 23 foot , and 80 to 100 HP motor,

The NWT side of the Liard is very silty. Tons of sand bars...make sure u know how to read the river for bars! A few decent rapid areas too. I know lots of people that run this river well with an 18ft and a 40hp outboard. The water taxi from Blackstone to Nahanni Butte settlement runs this type of setup.

Not sure about the hunting areas exactly...I just know lots of people hunt the Liard from Blackstone Territorial Park. Lots also just drive the Liard Highway...ah, er...gravel road.

2x on the non-resident has to have an outfitter. I checked into it as well!

I kinda figured you may be treaty...

As far as numbers go...it seems to me that more and more people hunting in that area are coming back without their moose. There has not been a fire or any logging in that area for years so they are certainly not concentrating in a good feed area. This time of year, I figure you pretty much have to be on a waterway. I am thinking of doing a jet boat trip somewhere yet mid-month. Just trying to decide how far I want to go.

Since you are in High Level, why not try hunting the Hay River. You can launch at the border or Indian Cabins. Hunt both Ab and NWT sides. The guys I know that go out that way always seem to get their moose.

Thanks for the direction diggs and good luck on the mid-north trip. How would i access some cariboo? do i have to go away up north. They are such a good animal to eat. I know we hunted them in northern Manitoba during the migration and i would like to get into a good herd again.

Barrens really depend on the migration route the herd chooses. Usually you have to go up on the Ingram Trail towards Gordon Lake north of Yellowknife. Some years though...they migrate right over the highway between Rae and Yellowknife. Also, some guys go out on in the barrens from the East Arm of Great Slave which can be done from Fort Resolution. Personally...I am not a big fan of barrens caribou. I get my woodland every year and my family enjoys it at the supper table. But Woods are getting harder and harder to get in this area.
