Elk rut
How’s the elk rut going in your area. Here in the Wainwright area it’s in full swing!

Not sure south of Calgary..
Todsy we Saw a lone spike, 1 nice 6x6 and a small 3 or 4 pointer.
None of them had interest in cow calls at all or any reaction to bugles.

That’s good to hear! Since I’m headed there for a week tonight.

Not a peep from the property we were hunting SW of Calgary, granted the elk just didn't seem to be there right now.
Anyone seeing/hearing any action west of the trunk road?

Ours are never super vocal....
I get a lot of tree smash responses..
But they are responding.

Elk rut
Called I n a big 6X6 yesterday morning to 35 yards. Every time I hit him with a young bull squeal he went crazy. Walked out perfectly broadside, screaming and raking a tree.

Nice! I'm yet to kill an elk with my bow so I would have had a tough time letting that guy walk lol.
Nothing here was screaming last season until later in the month, well into October. It was weird. Could be the same this year too

Had 10 bulls behind my garage today, 2 6's some rag horns and 5's . No cows in the neighborhood that I was aware of.. All those bulls hangin together and not being vocal at all. A couple of chuckles but pretty quiet. Didn't much look like rutting behaviour to me.

Lol. They were screaming, raking brush and chasing cows on the 5th. They are rutting. Whether you hear them or not.

I have had a few encounters but nothing close enough to seal the deal.. Its my first time putting a full month into hunting elk. Since its a general tag I'm thinking about just arrowing a cow elk to get my first elk on the ground. My family has an elk curse for 45 years.. so I want to be the first to break it lol
Opinions on what I should do with my tag? hold off for a bull or arrow a cow if one comes by?

I take what the good Lord gives me.
But if you imagine yourself taking a cow and would regret it, hold out for the bull.
I simply want great meat in the freezer. Best to decide what you want and stick to it. Who cares what I think lol.

Exactly what was just said. You need to decide for yourself what it is you’re hunting for. Decide what you’d be happy with taking, and decide if you’d be ok with tag soup. Having someone else’s opinion on how to fill your tags isn’t really what it’s all about.

last weekend they were still going pretty strong, just wondering if they have slowed down much this week?

Last couple days the elk have been pretty vocal all day around where I hunt. Haven't got one to take a chance on that cow that is dumb enough to hang out in the danger zone though . Sigh, if only fence lines were a suggestion rather than a rule.

Young bull was bugling occasionally in my field Wednesday evening but not a whole lot of noise SW of Calgary. Hoping to connect tomorrow evening
