Cooler
So, finally looking at a good cooler, but trying to not spend a fortune on it. Am I stuck with yeti or pelican--not cheap---but any other options out there?

Try Amazon Warehouse deals.
Lately there has been some roto molded coolers with some deep discounts.
Seen Yeti, Pelican, Engel but they go fast.
I just bought an Engel(soft sided) HD30 for $75 regular $259.99. Not a thing wrong with it just damaged packaging.
Got the best reviews versus other soft sided coolers.
Also scored my Yeti 45 tundra there for WELL below retail(months ago). Again nothing wrong with it but damaged packaging.
Yeti, Pelican never go on sale as far as I know which is funny to see on Amazon being so cheap compared to BPS, Cabelas, MEC.
EDIT:
Here are the only two listed right now.

I like my Coleman xtreme marine.
Holds ice well, and wont break the bank.
Mine was a wedding present, so I guess that means I've had it 13 years now. The plastic hinges gave up two years ago, but otherwise it's perfect.
I just cant justify spending the money on a yeti, but that's me.
Sure it's a better cooler, but I can buy a lot of replacements for the price.

The Cableas polar cap cooler performs extremely well if you are looking for a Yeti type cooler.
I did a multi day ice comparison using the Cabelas cooler vs a standard Igloo marine cooler and the difference was unbelievable.
Ice blocks lasted 7 days in the Cabelas cooler and even after 40 hours of having quarters in the cooler the blocks were only at 50%. The Igloo marine cooler didnt last 2 days
Worth the investment in my opinion. And alot cheaper than a
yeti for the size.

I bought a Yeti Tundra 45 last year in Grey. I was so impressed with it, that I am getting a Roadie as well this year. (The new blue looks nice and will match my truck)
The cooler will work the best if you follow the instructions on how to get the best ice retention.
As with any cooler, if you can pre chill everything that goes into the cooler, plus the cooler itself (at least kept in a cool place in the basement is what I did)
I have a Coleman Xtreme and between it and the Yeti I found the Yeti was way better.
Yeah I had to buy ice a couple times, but only because I like keeping my drinks very cold no matter what.
But I didn't refill as often or with as much ice.
Oh and another good tip, which I discovered to be the best overall way of getting the best ice retention period.
Don't let the wife and kids, family , friends, or whomever near the dam thing and the ice and cold drinks last way longer.
the less time the lid gets opened , the greater the chance of longer ice retention.
Sure beats yelling ' When you open the cooler, close the dam thing, and stop going into it all the time, Ice is expensive.'
You get a beer when I get a beer and I like to sit and enjoy mine.

Underwater Kinetics in Edmonton. They have Yeti, Engel, Pelican, Lerpin. Often they will have sales on the models with a blemish or imperfection (small scratch, etc)
Very happy with my Lerpin, your paying way more for the name when you buy a Yeti. Go check them out.

Another one for Underwater Kinetics.
Been through a lot of cooler in my time...bit the bullet and bought an Engel from them about 5 years...best cooler I've ever had, bar none. Being careful (opening it only when necessary and for very short time and keeping it in the shade) I've gone up to 8 days in the badlands in the summer (hot) on one load of ice.

Cooler
Look at Peavey Mart my kids bought me a yeti 45 and I see peavey mart has knock offs for half the price. The concern with the yeti is theft as we leave it in the back of the truck when we are hunting

Line-x has a cooler out now, Line-x Expedition Cooler. Looks like a pretty durable unit. I have no experience with this product but have heard good but limited feedback about them.

Affordable coolers
A friend, has drilled holes in plastic coolers and inserted lo-expansion foam into them. So depending on what your needs are, it might be worth trying. I haven't done any yet but will, when I start hauling groceries to the trapline this summer..

I bought a Stanley
It's not a Yeti, but it works and I didn't have to mortgage the house

underwaterkineticscanada.com in Edmonton. They cut the coolers in half
so you can see how they are made.
They have awesome pricing.

I second the coleman extreme marine.
Had it for years. Keeps ice for days.
Inexpensive compared to the Yeti's for sure.

Spend 30$ and buy some foil backed bubble wrap insulation and a roll of duct tape.
Insulate your cheap cooler and the stuff will stay cold or frozen twice as long.
Filling the lids with foam makes a lot of difference as well.

If you keep your cooler in a freezer, the ice will last even longer.

We have Yeti at work now, I can't quite fathom the attraction of the high priced coolers. Coleman Marine's worked good enough for me for the last 20yrs or so. There is usually someone going to town for something later on in the week, I just get them to buy me a couple of bags of ice when they go, if I think I could use it. I'd be surprised if I've spent the difference in price yet. Keep it out of the sun and put some insulation over the top of it, like a sleeping bag or something, they'll keep cool all week.

I agree completely we have one of the Cabelas coolers that we use every summer for our salmon fishing trip to Campbell River and have taken as long as 3 days meandering back to central AB with no melting or spoilage at all

The yetis sure are nice! I was skeptical myself until I was given one as a gift. I’m a total believer in them now. Grizzly coolers and the cabelas products are the other 2 I had been looking at. One thing I would consider as it is a benefit to those Royo molded type coolers is checking the inter agency grizzly bear website to make sure it is bear certified. I know many knock offs are printing similar type stickers but not going through the actual testing.

Completely agree, you can buy an awful lot of ice for the price difference.
A LOT of ice..
I have the same cooler & my hinges went too, $20 for aluminum ones off FleaBay and as good as new. Paid $40 for it on sale
Took it on a 4 day canoe trip last year and after day four it still had plenty of ice in it after sitting in the blazing sun all day every day and being opened every half hour for more go juice. If you freeze the cooler first your golden.
To me the rotomolds are too small inside due to all the insulation, unless ya spend $500+ on a giant one.

Underwater Kenetics
I took a drive into Edmonton yesterday and stopped by Undewater Kenetics and did some cooler shopping, on the advice of members of this forum. Al gave me a thorough explanation of the differences between the brands he carries and a tour of his warehouse to boot. I wound up buying a 70 Liter Lerpin with 2" of insulation on the bottom, sides and lid. $250.00 out the door. He had cut open coolers to show you the differences in insulation and also examples of the hinges and gaskets each cooler uses. A great shopping experience, I highly recommend UK if you are in the market for a new cooler before May long weekend. Cheers!
