Have hunted in the uk for over 10 years ,deer Ducks ,rabbits and other small game. Have both my firearms tickets(tika 308 and more to come.
Where is the crown land where a lot of people talk about, have looked on line and they just give numbers like 328 for rocky and so on.
On the maps it don't give no boundaries ,so can I just go and shoot where I like as long as is safe. Any help will be very much appreciated

Step one would be get the current hunting regs booklet. It comes with a map of all the WMU's in Alberta. Make sure to read the entire reg booklet. Then read it again.

Hi Graham. Crown land is public land that can be used for all sorts of recreational activities except where they might be restricted where there is a park. There is also grazing leases, that can be accessed by notification for hunting. There may be vehicle restrictions here.

You can shoot your non restricted guns on crown land. Restricted guns need to be limited to an approved range.

The numbers are Wildlife Management Units (WMU), that are outlined by a little map in the hunting regulations booklet. The booklet is available for free at many gas stations, provincial buildings (probably need a F+W office though) and Fish and Wildlife offices.

The WMU may have different season starting and ending days, as well as different legal animal requirements, and usually(?) have well defined borders, like roads and rivers.

Welcome to the forum! Perhaps someone in your area can take you out for the day and show you the ropes around your area. Good luck

You don't have to limit yourself to any particular location, or WMU in the province, just as long as you are keeping the in mind different rules where they change.

You can hunt in some parks (depends) and reserves with permission from the band, or accompanying a native friend.

It takes a little time to get to know an area, you might have to drive a bit to find some crown around Sylvan. Generally speaking, if it is wild, green and is not posted or fenced you are good. And make sure you are outside city/town limits also. There are some allowances in towns/cities for bow hunting though.

You can't trespass on private property without permission. A county map will show which land is private property.

The guys have it pretty much covered, so all I can say is ;

Hunting here is a lot different then where you came from. You will probably see less game then you did back home, numbers wise.
And if you were a game keeper or a close friend of game keeper you may even have less hunting opportunities here.

But you will find a lot more species are available to hunt, and you'll have a lot more freedom to choose what, where, and when to hunt.

You will also find that there are a lot of places where you can get lost.

Please follow the advice these guys are giving you, and from me, if you can't find anyone local to hunt with, stay close enough to the roads to be able to see or hear the traffic. And get GPS unit and learn how to use it.

There are places around you where you can walk for days and never see another human or any sign of a human ever being there.

Over the years, more then one newcomer has vanished into this wilderness and never was heard from again.

I been involved in a couple of rescues of Albertan's who thought they know their way around in these forests.

There's a lot to enjoy out there if you never take anything for granted.

Welcome to Alberta. I hope you love it here and please stay safe.

If you are ever up this way, stop by for a visit, I'll brew us a tea and tell you some tall tales.
I might even show you where I hunt. LOL

Ummmm...no,generally speaking you can hunt on "most" Crown(public) land, aside from parks and other sanctuaries(wildlife corridors identified on WMU map and regs). You must have permission from the landowner to hunt on private land.
Great idea to take up the offers for help, there's a lot of info you'll need to know in regards to General tags, draw tags etc.
Enjoy,Alberta is a hunters paradise with tons of opportunity once you get a grasp on the regs.It could also be a legal nightmare if you don't fully understand the rules.
