Default Buffalo in cow pasture.

What's the best way to get a really big bull Buffalo out of a group of angus cows. Odds are the damn thing bred them already, I know shooting it would prbly be the best way but looking for alternatives. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Yes it was a neighbours farm raised Buffalo that got out

45-70,

if it's the neighbour's livestock aren't they responsible for it?

what kind of pasture? here on the prairie I would chase him with the truck, maybe lure the angus away with a bale. I'm not a fan of buffalo so I wouldn't risk being on a quad or horse

Mannnn Beefalo. Mmmmm. Plus you could have a nice rug and mount along with some good meat.

Sounds like a good opportunity to talk to the neighbour and play "lets make a deal"

Default Let's make a deal

There was quite a few that got out. I think he will be playing let's make a deal with lots of neighbours. Would a bull taste good if he was all rutted up. I know with pigs, u castorate then slaughter about 4 weeks later.

Where you at....I have no problem taking that critter off your hands.

I have a new BBQ and love bison meat.

yup and they are going to turn buffalo loose in Banff National Park. Can't wait to hear the stories of hikers sitting in trees waiting for the buffalo to leave.

Either get your neighbor to shoot him or at least let him know your intentions. If he's not too wild I would try and pen the bull with the cows and then cut the cows out. Don't rile him because he'll total all your fences.

I'll take a calf off your hands if he has bred one of your cows.

I doubt anyone here can answer that. In the interests of all us finding out the answer I think the best bet is to castrate the buffalo, wait the 4 weeks and let us know. Besides he might not of bred them all and that would be good preventative medicine.

Call the Brand Inspector and let them deal with it and the other owner. That is what they are paid to deal with.

Do you castrate elk?moose? deer? Mountain sheep? antelope?

For the OP, have you tried coaxing it out with a pail of grain?

i'm not suggesting that, but if you do take pots of pics please.

I'll come and get him, too (or, as Chewie said, take one of those calves -- that would be some good meat, there!).

What's your water situation ? Any way off moving some heavy duty panels in around a dug-out and slowly sort off the cows.
Other option is to get the vet in and tranq him but its sketchy in this heat . Early morning Tranq him and move him with a front end loader. Would be the safest way.
If he's an ol boy he ain't worth hamburger, it'll make dog food and that's about all.

Brand inspector is your first option. When I had one in my cattle the owner had me put a 270 in his left ear. Doubt if he bred you cows , probably a beat up bull pushed out by others . They don't breed cattle easily.

Yup, call the brand inspector first, but the above scenario will likely happen.

You can herd a buffalo anywhere it wants to go.
I've been on a couple of these incidents and it's pretty tough to get it back where it came from.
Usually best to just shoot it.

Maybe not, but I am sure it will have a ball trying. To the OP: Friend, If you need any help I have a gun and I will travel.

I got many a gun, but only few neighbours. I need to find the brand inspector and go from there. Thank you all for the advice.

Have you talked to the neighbor? Seems like a good place to start...

Just a word of caution , I think they are some of the most dangerous animals ever. I find bears more predictable than a disgruntled Buffalo bull.

Fertility would be really poor for bison/cattle cross; very unlikely that they would go to full term and deliver a calf.
Lots of people have tried to make these crosses and given up in frustration.

X2

Specially lone bulls.... Quite unpredictable... Don't try pushing/herding it with a vehicle, that sorta task is better suited to a small crawler or something with lite armour.

Last bison bull that got out around here ended up taking a long dirt nap after trashing every fence in his way.
