Default Gun Gifting

Good day to all.
Q. A friend of mine has a couple of friends from the US coming up for a hunt. My buddy has just been made aware that his US friend has a couple of custom made rifles he would like to gift to my friend.

What protocol needs to be followed to make sure is is all done correctly and legally?

A) Can he bring them up with him as an owner, getting the paperwork handled while up here?
B) Do they have to following the regular route when importing firearms.

Thank you. I look forward to all of your feedback!

Good hunting!!

Don't think that's kosher, I belive paperwork need to be completed before and at the boarder.
Also I belive when someone enters from the U.S. they have to return and confirm the gun and remaining ammunition with customs.

I believe prophet river firearms in Lloyd provides an import service. It might be wise to get in touch with them.

Probably not much of an issue in Canada if they are non restricted firearms but the "friends" bringing them in from the US can be in a whole lot of trouble for ignoring ITAR regulations about exporting firearms!

There's no wanting to ignore any rule or regulation at all.

By the book on this for sure. I simply need to confirm what 'the book' reads in regards.

Thank you all for your input. It's greatly appreciated.

In addition to Prophet River there is also IRUNGUNS who offer an import service. As noted its not just the Canadian rules to abide by, but pay careful attention to the US requirements. An easy rote is to check with bother respective border services, get it from the horses mouth (or pay the import agents)

the USA guy is the expoter of the rifle out of the USA

paperwork needs ot be complete but he can bring it along to sell (for a dollar) on his trip but needs to get the paperwork in a hurry

I suggest you check on any regulations allowing a US citizen to place a (non restricted) US firearm (properly declared on entry to Canada) in safe storage in Canada for use by the US citizen owner on a future trip to Canada.

I suspect such a (non restricted) firearm could also be legally loaned by the US citizen owner to another (properly licensed or permitted) US or Canadian citizen for use in Canada. Since this is a non restricted firearm no registration paperwork would be required in Canada, and the firearm would not have been permanently exported as the ownership would legally remain with the original US citizen owner, only the 'care and custody' would ('temporarily') change.

IMHO, the OP should to carefully research the actual US export and Canadian import regulations, and not rely on any verbal authority or Internet forum legal advice. Please confirm what the actual regulations say for our general information.

Good Luck, YMMV
