Range report: the ranch hand/ trapper
So I finally got out this morning to play with my new toy. Rossi ranch hand in .44 mag. At no point did I intend on leaving it with the faux stock so I've - being a cheapskate - cut and fitted an oak extension to the existing stock. It shoulders just like a legitimate rifle only with a 12 inch barrel. I wasn't expecting the sights to be bang on and I wasn't disappointed, actually pleasantly surprised to find it only shoots a couple inches high (with the rear sight elevator completely removed). I will be changing the front sight soon enough. Not necessarily shooting for groups I still managed off hand to keep the rounds inside 2-3 inches at 30 yards - 2 inches high and a little left. Then between reloading and giggling happily I ran another 60 rounds through it without a hiccup. I was able to snipe pop cans and a few shotgun hulls with ease. Federal 180 and 240 gr were darned near identical in terms of recoil and poi. The Rossi ejected the cases high and with enough hang time I could catch them in mid air. Winchester 240s cycled just as easily but for some reason only ejected a few inches clear of the action. The last five shots were some Barnes Vortex factory loads. Managed to get all five touching at that 30 yard mark.
A good plinker, truck or camp gun and possibly even a backpack deer gun. I can't wait to change that front sight and get out again to test it at longer ranges.
