270win long range shooting/hunting
hi I have a 270win parker hale and I would like to rebuild it so I can hunt mule deer white tail and antelope at long ranges(at most 800yrds). I just don't know if it would be able to take down an animal at that range and how bad the bullet would drop. If it would be a good gun for long range what would I have to change on it for parts and how much would it cost about. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

why limit yourself to 800 yards,
anything inside 1 km is doable , you might not hit what your lookin at ? but you could possibly hit something anyway ?

I know I could shoot that farther while target shooting, the question is would I be able to ethically shoot an animal at that distance with my gun. I have no worry in my accuracy, I'm just questioning the power and magnitude of my rifle.

If the accuracy is not in question...then you need to do nothing to the rifle.
Do you have a chronograph? Do you know your muzzle velocity? If you don't have a chrony or know your muzzle velocity then shooting accurate to 800 yards is a large jump....

I would suggest that you educate yourself.
There are tons of sites with ballistic tables. Start there.

Why not sell it for a 270 mag? Or learn to stalk the animal & get to within say 200-100 yards.

i have looked at the ballistics charts and they show good results, I dont know if i would get a quick clean kill or if i would just wound the animal and have it run all over the country side that's all

I am a bit reluctant to comment on ethics, but taking power and magnitude into consideration you may be able to kill something if you hit it in the right spot.

Do you know the muzzle velocity and the energy of your bullet at 800 yards?

I know that the bullet will get there I am unsure on what damage the bullet will cause at that distance

Then you have some homework to do. What bullet are we talking? Weight, construction, BC....

by no means I am an expert in this subject but since I shoot .270 I will try to comment.
1. I have never practised shooting over 200 yard with my current set up so I limit myself to 200 yards max.
2. Zeroed at 200 yard, 150GR bullet will drop ( e.g nosler partion or game king) about 43-44 inches at 500 yard. So that should give you an idea?
3. Some bullets may fail to expand at that distance.
just curious... What is your current longest, consistent and accurate shot? What kind of optics do you have? Are you shooting a factory load or hand load?
If you do a research soon you will find out not many people use .270 for a long range shooting or hunting.

I was just the opposite......I went from 400 yards to stalking. I guess both ways are challenging.

So what is the muzzle velocity, bullet weight, ballistic coefficient?....I am talking measured muzzle velocity not a guess. Do you reload? Use factory ammo?
There is no way that superX bullet is going 1500fps at 800 yards.....your muzzle velocity would have to be around 3500fps....no .270 does that with a 150gr bullet.
Set your goals closer....have a 1.5 inch goal at 300yards....and 2.5 inch at 500yards, get to know how your rifle shoots at these distances, crawl before you fly.

This is why so many big game animals are found dead or wounded. People think they can take em down with small caliber at long range. Think about the consequence before you try something

thank you for your info, reason for large grouping is I'm a left hand shooter and the gun has right hand stock with cheek pad(ordered new stock which will be here soon), I don't have a proper shooting rest I just use the tractor at my farm ,and I have only put a couple boxes through the gun, I'm still not quite in tuned with the gun and its optics, I'm working with what I have

I don't hav a bipod or gun rest at this moment, at 100yrds while sighting in I was getting about 1/2 inch groupings

100 yards will only tell you a small story....the long distance game barely begins at 300 yards but it's a great distance to become proficient at and learn if you and your rifle have the potential to shoot further.
1/2 MOA at 100 may or may not equate to 1/2 MOA at other distances.
