Default hit my buck this morning

well i hit the buck iv been after all season today at 11:05. did a perfect stalk to about 18 yards. he stood up at looked away from me at another buck so i shot him. but it looks like i hit him in the back part of the shoulder. i didn't get much penetration (maybe 6 inches) but he was bleeding out around the arrow a little bit so I'm hoping he is bleeding more inside. going to give him about 3 hours then go back in. wish me luck that i will get him!

thanks,
yote

Did you find the arrow?
That will give you a decent indcation of the hit you got on him.
Hopefully all works out, keep tracking and flagging!

I'm hoping he just laid down there. if i get him ill post some pics! thanks for the good lucks guys!

I hate these posts. Makes bowhunting look great to the hunting community. We all have had a bad deal happen before but keep it to yourself.

yotekiller I do wish you luck though. I hope you find him.

Makes 2 of us. I don't mind hearing about clean kills but don't care to hear about these ones.

This can happen to anyone
Besides it probably is a clean kill he is just giving it some time. I don't think we should only talk about successful clean hunts because sometimes the failures people experience help us all learn.

Good luck on the retrieval he's probably laying where you saw him last

sometimes you just get a bad shot. just the way the cookie crumbles. not every kill will be a clean one. just gotta try your best to make sure it is.

I don't think we should worry so much about how we make hunters look on this forum. This is a hunting forum, and anti hunters trolling it aren't going to change their minds if every story we post ends up with game dying instantly.

In fact, it is good that these stories get posted. It reminds all of us to slow down and pick a spot when shooting at game, and to make sure our equipment and skills are up to par before going afield.

It also helps recruit a tracking party in instances when the game is still not recovered after an initial search.

Good luck yotekiller, keep us posted.

hey guys so we didn't find him we had really good blood for the first bit but then it tapered down to hardly anything after about 200-250 yards. i am pretty sure i got 1 lung and the arrow is still in him so I'm guessing thats why he isn't bleeding much. pretty sure of where he went to so we are going back in the morning.

This stuff happens, don't let it get you down, even if you don't find him. Give it your best shot and move on. Coyotes got to eat too, he wont be wasted.

Go back to the last spot you have blood, and implement a bit of "CSI" methods. Get on your hands and knees and look close - even though the blood has tapered, it's likely still there - somewhere. Finding even the smallest bit, might just be the break you need! Don't give up easily! All the best!

And check for ravens, crows, and magpies as well!
If you are pretty sure you got one lung, he may not have gone far and bedded down somewhere.

Totally disagree with posting this crap. People should be out looking for there animals instead of post how they wounded an animal. People need to calm down and make it count. Yes stuff happens and I am not knock the OP. The problem is there are way to many animals running around wounded from guys with sticks. I hope they do put muledeer on a draw province wide. I see way to many every year running around with arrow hanging out of t here behinds.

Also people should have to prove they can shoot a bow or a gun before they are aloud to hunt period.

Default guys with sticks

I hear this every year how so many people see deer running around with arrows sticking out of their behinds...and how people should have to prove their ability etc. etc. This could happen to anyone regardless of ability and the only reason you don't see deer running around with bullets sticking out of them is because you don't have x-ray vision. Regardless what weapon is used mistakes are going to happen and it is the responsibility of the user to ensure they are competent with whatever weapon they choose to use.

Back to the topic at hand.

Yote you keep on him...Had the same thing happen to me 9 years ago ended up finding him the next day. Watch for birds and if he is down you will find him.

Good luck fella.

Just out of curiousity... how many deer a year do you see running around with an arrow hanging out of them?

I'm sure the vast majority of bow hunters on here can get 3 arrows into the 10-ring at 20 - 40 yards... but it's a totally different story when shooting at an animal. If you can say that you have never missed an animal or grazed/shouldered/wounded an animal... then, IMO, you haven't hunted for very long.

Good luck finding him, Yote!

So what are you saying? I am not seeing wounded animals? Last year there was 6 different muledeer bucks that were wounded with in 5 miles off each other. Some you could see perfect holes that blead and others that actually did have arrows still sticking out. I do hunt 95% of the time with archery gear so I am not picking on bow hunters. But these threads are a joke and make every bow hunter or any hunter look bad. I don't care if this is a hunting forum or not. These should not be on here every 3rd day. It is starting to get out of hand. That is also why I stated about people needing to prove there abilities before they are aloud to hunt.

Who said anything about my abilities or how long I have hunted??? I have had my bad luck too. You just will NEVER will read about it on here or any other forum. I am so far from a novice hunter bud. But thanks for your comment.

To the op. Sorry for my comments. I am cheering for you to find your deer. I agree with alot. Get a high vantage point and look for birds. Sure hope to see pics of your deer.

Default Hunting

I agree that folks shoudnt be posting thaat they just hit an animal, if nothing else it's just plain bad mojo to say anything until the animal is recovered. I figured this animal wouldn't be recovered when I read about the poor penetration. Go cruise YouTube and you'll see how many bow shots have poor penetration. My deer arrows are 650 grains total weight and I'll tell you what- they penetrate. Not to start a Pzzzing match but its apparent that some bow hunters could up the arrow weight a bit. To the original poster what's the total weight of your arrow and what kind of head did you use? I'm also willing to wager that this was a mechanical head on a strong quartering away shot.

The thing to do now is get out there and find the deer, the magpies will tell you if it's dead or not. The next thing is to tear up your tag. Then go and read Dr. Ashbys findings on arrow penetration and lethality.

Finally, don't fret we all do dumb things sometimes and it's how we learn.
