Im looking at getting a couple nice skinning knives for sheep, bear, and moose.

Bought a Havalon (Piranta) last year, but unfortunately did not get the chance to try it yet. They only weigh a couple of ounces, the blades are like scalpels and a new one can be installed in a couple of seconds.

I know it sounds crazy but I have been using Olfa utility knives for years. I carry a larger heavy blade one and a smaller lighter blade one. A pack of replacement blades and you are good for as many animals as you can harvest. They are scalpel sharp and no need to resharpen. Very ecomonical and practical, just not very high on the "cool" factor!

For deer and bear I like the muskrat skinner from Knives of Alaska. It's a small knife but works well for me.

I like to carry pocket knives in my pack I did buy a havolon it's no different than the scalpel that I have carried for the last 10 year. Only it costs way more. And they are no good for making the thick hide cuts on moose. I don't carry and big blade knives I'd rather carry 5 small blade pocket knives that weigh the same as one big blade.

I like a three knife combo, I carry a Buck Vangard as my go to knife, medium drop point. Good for skinning, field dressing, and all around camp knife. My two specialty are Buck Paklite's. A caper for any fine detail skinning or cutting. And the gut hook ring for the initial cut. Both of them are just skeletal frame and weigh so little you don't know they are there.

I have a brand new Schrade+ "Old Timer" 4" blade that has never been used that I bought from Walmart for $8.00 (regular $34.00) back in 2005.
I have a Scrade 3" fold back I bought at the same time that was never used.
Like someone else said: it may seem funny but.....
.......for gutting I use a folding utility knife (razor sharp) &/or a couple of good serrated edge Paring Knifes (I use these for 4 years or so & then I buy new ones). Still use them in the house.
I only hunt deer so they work great.

I carry an older Browning Sportsman skinner that I inherited when my dad passed away. He got it as a gift from an employer in the mid-1970s and never used it once, he always told me that when he passed on it was going to be mine.

HAVALON!!! The best knife I own by far!! Accompanied with a sling blade you will save time and do a great job on your capes.. If your skinning anything to be mounted your crazy not to own one.

I got a Havalon Piranta last spring and all I can say is wow, skinned out quite a few bears with it, about two bear hides a blade. Love the fact you just switch out blades in seconds and no down time sharpening. This spring I switched over to the Havalon Torch, it's a little stiffer blade, the Piranta tip had a tendency to break off sometimes in the knuckle or joints of bone.

So far it has gutted 9 deer, 4 seasons worth of fish and all my general outdoors tasks. I have only honed the edge, never needed a good sharpening.

I bought one of these a while ago:
http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=42
a Bill Moran design made by Spyderco, with a clip point.
Wanted something different for a change.
I can't wait to use it on a big old ram this fall. :-)

I've had really good experiences with the 'Knives of Alaska' series but there are lots of good knives out there. For me it's a lot about how it feels in your hand.
Some of the best knives I've ever had (and are still using) have been a couple of custom knives - both from different makers.
I won't however buy too much that doesn't have an orange handle anymore - I've left too many good knives behind on the forest floor!

I carry the swingblade and a Havalon Piranta
I also have the Kodi Pak but mostly just use the saw
I found the Piranta a fantastic caping tool as well as perfect for bears and other small furbearers

Pretty much skinning everything out now a my piranta. Done lions, bears, wolf and deer with them. Takes a bit getting used to how sharp they are. Breaking joints with knives of alaska.

Tried out the Swing Blaze last year.... It really works great. Bought a Cutco, and am looking forward to trying that one this year.
