Default More draw controversy

As usual, the draw results are available, and the controversy has started. It started on the 11th when some people were wondering why they couldn't see the results, now some people can't understand the pronghorn draw results. Then there are the people complaining that they weren't drawn, yet people with less priority were drawn, for the same wmu. This seems to happen every year, but in virtually every situation, the results are easily explained, and there is no issue at all, other than people didn't read the draw booklet to see the draw dates, or they don't understand the draw priority system. There have been a few exceptions over the years, but in most cases, if people just read the draw booklet before posting, they would already know the answer to their question, or they would realize that they really have no reason to complain. That said, I predict another week or so of posts asking simple questions, that anyone that read the draw booklet would find obvious, along with more complaining that the system made a mistake, when in fact it worked exactly as it was supposed to.

I am sure that someone will take offense to my post.

Probably someone that couldn't be bothered to read the draw booklet.

Default A little overwhelmed

I'll be honest, I'm new to hunting and shooting. Most of my experience in these regards was when I was a kid with one of my grandfathers and that was a walk in the woods; sometimes he wouldn't even bother bringing his gun along. I spent most of my time in the woods hiking and camping. Hunting's new and a learning curve.

I decided to apply for a moose tag just to start my draw priority figuring I'd likely be drawn when have more experience under my belt. I applied for area 518 as I'd seen some moose in there in my travels, and thought "hey, why not?" I wasn't expecting to be drawn so when the servers went down, it wasn't a big deal. I checked tonight over supper and hey it's up.

My wife's still laughing at the look on my face. I kinda feel a bit overwhelmed right now. Kinda changes my whole fall plans.

My point being, I kinda figured I wouldn't be drawn in my first year priority. Guess I didn't really understand the draw system either.

I got a guy in mind up here who hunts that WMU as part of a group that draw for tags that I've been meaning to ask but yeah, overwhelmed.

Moose are a bit of work LoL

To be fair, the whole draw system, booklet etc. can be pretty overwhelming to a new hunter. In this day and age though, it's easier to ask a question on line, than take an hour and sit down and read it and understand it. Guess that's where we are at now!!!...Good Luck to everyone this fall!!!

But you seem willing to accept that, some people would rather blame the system. If you read the booklet, and still have some questions, I would be glad to go through the booklet with you. Drop by trap and skeet on a Sunday morning, and we will get you shooting as well as answer your questions.

I got drawn for an area I never applied to 226.
Called to find out what could have happened and told it was my choice. Now I have to try and get permission on land I never been to. Interesting how things fall through the cracks.

Maybe your mouse rolled on the wmu selection....I had to re-verify a couple because as you scroll down and then let off sometimes the mouse keeps going or there is a delay in what you see and you wind up with a different selection

I think one of the biggest issues some guys have, and it goes hand in hand with not reading the book in its entirety, is not comprehending that the draw code isn't the same as the WMU they're putting in for in the cases where there are codes that match up with WMU numbers. Seems there's always someone who enters the WMU instead of the code #, and ends up with a different WMU than they intended on. The system definitely could be made a bit more intuitive for new users but honestly, if someone can't take the time to read and figure it out or it's just beyond their powers of comprehension, do we really want that person walking the woods with a loaded rifle at their disposal?

Good reason to print a copy of your draw application. I always do that and put them in my gun safe. Just in case.

this is the first draw that iv'e entered in over 50 years of hunting. i was shocked to see that i was drawn in one of the categories i was trying for. i found the whole draw experiance a little overwhehlming and confusing. my biggest problem was not knowing what the new general regulations would be. i got a great draw but it might disquallify me from the same hunt closer to home. not complaining but i can see why they have an undersubscribed category and i feel for those who have waited years to get the hunt theyv'e dreamed of and have to go back to 0 priority cause they got lucky on 2 entries.

Anybody know why my goat draw says "initial"? Does that mean I got drawn?
And how come my 438 sheep priority is still "0" after all these years of not getting drawn? I'm getting screwed.............

Why the hell haven't I gotten my bison tag yet I've been putting in every year since it started. Heck I almost hit one on the highway every time I go north.

For me the draw system is almost bankable hours, I thought I would get a non trophy sheep this year as a P12 I was wrong but I will say with great conviction that there will have been at least 1 other P12 or greater apply for the 1 tag available. I could have chose a zone that made it a sure thing but I chose the, knew the numbers roled the dice, and will role them again next year I like our draw system!

P5 did not get a turkey either which may not give me a spring turkey but it will mean I have a hope for 2014

I am not sure if you know this but the Bison draw has no priority. I think it is he only one like that in Alberta. So even if you applied every year or this is your first year your chances don't get any better. As the 2012 draw booklet said that there was almost 8000 applicants and 50 tags in 2011 making your chance to be drawn 0.7%

New regs and seasons are included in the draw booklet.

Might as well get used to these types of questions every year now.

"Oh I've been drawn for an area I drove through once on the highway, could you please tell me your best spot to go to so I can make this as easy as possible? Thanks"

They are starting to run rampant.

I know a guy in our hunting party who was drawn for a moose tag in camp WR in 07 and had drawn a bull tag in 441 in 08. I talked to our local F&W officer in the off season and he checked it out and said every thing "looked" legit. My bro and I were a pr. 2 at the time and we weren't expecting to get drawn for another year or 2. I don't imagine any one is going to step up and say I shouldn't have got drawn and give their tag back. I ended up with half a moose out of it in the end.

438 has no priority system assigned to it...it's written in bold in the on the bottom of draw booklet. So your not getting screwed on that one.
