Lonesome Dove is the best western of all time. The writing and dialogue is truly incredible.
"did you give that boy your name"
"I gave him my horse "
Many many other lines that are brilliant.
BUT, technically, its not a movie, its a mini-series, so it doesn't qualify
My choice would be "The Good , The Bad and the Ugly" Its a epic with many moving parts, I guess from a technical perspective its not a great movie, but from an entertainment perspective, I love that flick.
While we are on the topic of movies filmed in Alberta, here's a few filmed on my property or just across the river from me, that I like to watch only because I like to see the locations on the screen.

Lee Marvin: Don't know many words, but growl "I was born under a wanderin' star" often while walking. Then there is the leaning drunk horse and Lee in Cat Balou. My favs.

Lonesome Dove.
Tom Horn.
Unforgiven.
Almost forgot Broken Trail.
I have watched the extended trailer for Old Henry, we will be watching soon, I suspect it will make my list as well.

Big x2 however not sure you can call it a western, more klondike / musical.
Lee Marvin singing "I was born under a wandering star" classic!

I was almost to this post and couldn't believe that neither had been mentioned yet and then you come and knock it out of the park. I fully agree with this.
There have been some great ones mentioned on here and a lot of good movies that I still haven't seen apparently.
I do kind of like Eastwood myself.
