270WSM or 300WSM

I'm currently looking into a browning A-Bolt Mountain Titanium or a Sako 85 Finnlight, but I can't decide on a caliber. I'd really like to get a 260 AI, but finding a 260 is tough. I'm leaning towards the 300 WSM because there's a wide variety of bullts types/weights. Just wonder what everyone else thought about the to calibers. Also wondering what would be the rifle of choice, A-Bolt Mountain Titanium or the 85 Finnlight.

Of the two I'd pick a Finnlight. Both are great cartridges and I'm not sure you'd go wrong with either. If you plan on doing a lot of moose or grizz hunting then I'd likely lean to the .300WSM but truthfully, either will do everything you need it to.

Either caliber has enough oomph to get the job done. Depends what you hunt & where you hunt it. If you spend time in Grizz country I would pick the 300 over the 270. I have shot a 270 wsm for several years in a Browning X-Bolt and love it - my next one will be the 300 wsm. Two fine rifles also. Both are all weather and have a 60 degree bolt lift, I believe the Browning wsm's come standard with a 23" barrel, while the Sako is 24" and change. My personal preference would be the Browning, simply because I have owned quite a few and have become very comfortable with their top tang safety release - it is second nature to me now and I never have to think about it if I need to get it off in a hurry. Just my opinion, and you would not go wrong with either rifle (or caliber).

Personally,I don't like lightweight magnums.My choice would be a Finnlight in 7mm-08.

Also wondering if anyone knows if you can cycle the bolt with the safety on with either the browning or the sako?

My son has a Kimber Montana chambered for the 270 WSM and shoots sub 1" groups with a 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip. I'm sure that a Sako Finnlight will do better with either cartridge. I truly find that it dosen't have much recoil for such a light firearm chambered for a magnum. I also have a Sako 85 Baverian chambered in a 300 WSM and needless to say it is a tack driver.

With the Sako 75's and 85's you can cycle the cartridge out of the chamber while it is on safety. There is a small button on the right side of the receiver next to the bolt that you depress which in turn releases the bolt. Find the Sako web site and

You really want a 260, but you're leaning towards a 300

. You're as crazy as I am. I think out of the two you mention the 270 is the closest fit.

Why not get a Sako in a 6.5x55?

The A-Bolt Brownings don't have the option of unloading while the safe is on. Only the X-Bolt does. I have an A-Bolt 300 WSM in the Stainless Stalker/W Boss / 4200 Elite on top.I got it in 2004....I absolutely LUVVV this rifle....this caliber.

Already have multiple calibers in that range (243, 7mm-08 AI, 260 AI, 270-08, 30.06). Really like the 260 AI because of it's ballistics, bullet weight, and it's different. Love reloading so AI fits that "need". Also the some of the guys I shoot with already have that caliber and I sold my 270.

I would myself buy the 270WSM I have one and love it..
I have shoot everything from moose to deer with 150 grain and have had great results

you know that browning is only available in camo right? i would own a titanium browning if only it were available in a black stock. them camo units are fugly. i have the a bolt stainless synthetic in 270 WSM. i dont know how good it is capable of shooting, but i will admit the gun is better than the guy behind it. ive shot under an inch though.

You won't go wrong with either the 270 or 300 WSM's from what it sounds like your looking for. As for rifle choice I've only handled the Mountain Ti. I personally probably wouldn't buy one, but that is just because its not my style. As far as the rifle goes it is pretty smooth and very light. Nothin wrong with it from what I could see. If your in Red Deer area Sportsmans Den had one in 300 and 270 WSM a few months back that they hadn't sold last year. GOod luck and let us know what you decide on.

I have a Sako 85 greywolf in 300wsm, and a Kimber 8400 in 270wsm. I like them both, but if I were to choose 1 of the 2 it would be the Sako. Just my opinion.

Went with the Sako 85 in the 300 WSM. Sako kicked little more that expected. Put a limbsaver recoil pad on and the kick is night and day. Three shot group of .336" .

Congrats on your purchase! Sounds like a pretty accurate rifle with a grouping of only .336". Good luck on the up coming season!
