Default remington 870 question

i recently bought a 12 gauge remington 870 express with a 20" barrel it shoots 3" magnum shells and 2 3/4"

i'm trying to figure out when it was made and if i can use steel shot in it... so if there's a guru out there let me know...

You can check here.

However, if it is an express, I would guess it is okay for steel, as the express came on the scene way after steel was developed.

I am just going from memory here but I think some barrels have a star stamped next to the guage marking indicating it is safe for steel. I'll have to check my info when I get back home.

The star would most likely be signifying a fixed full choke barrel.

Depending on the age of it ,a replacement barrel may be available with Rem Choke. By the sounds of it these other fellas know more about that than me.

My barrel has the star and is factory threaded for Rem-chokes. I'll keep looking for the source where I read about the star marking.

IF it's threaded for chokes then you're good to go for steel. Actually with newer loads any barrel (except damascus) is fine for steel due to the newer wads and cups. Through in a modified choke and you're good to go.

really? why's that? just because steel doesn't give and the full choke compresses too much?

i called them back and... "all remingtons have been approved for steel shot since 1950"

Really,

Steel is not as malable or compressable as lead, full chokes with steel usually result is poor patterns, and possible bulging or "ringing" of the choke.

Go pick up some reading material about shotguns and loads it will serve you well going forward.

Request that in writing.............

If you decide to shoot steel with a full choke, try to stick to the smaller shot sizes whenever possible. As Dick says, do some reading and then make an informed choice as to how you want to proceed.

WOW!!!
I just got an email from remington, and they gave me THE answer on the (*)!
I at first said it would signify full choke because i was not aware that the barrel had screw in's.
HOWEVER, Remington says " The (*) on the barrels signifies what the angle of the rim cut on the mouth of the chamber is".
NO KIDDING!!
That one went right by all of us ( no wonder!)
