Default Bit of Bear Hunting Fun

Me and the boy have been out chasing bears a few days this year.....didnt have time to run a bait, so it was his first few spot and stalk spring hunts. All in all, it was a successful season, saw 36 bears over the span of 5 days. The boy was fired right up to fold his tag as he loves bear hams (and in reality is 14 and just pumped to fold almost any tag haha), but initially was trying his best to be picky size wise. Ultimately though, on the final day we could make it out this year he said he was going to take the first one we could make a decent stalk on and did exactly that lol. Was an excellent stalk and even better shot. It was his first rifle bear (he's taken one with a crossbow and one with a muzzleloader off our baits previously). Fair to say he had an absolute blast and much prefers spot stalk over sitting over bait, which I tend to agree with in my "older" age....always used to love spot and stalk bear hunting when I was younger as well.

I didnt really plan on shooting one, but after his tag was folded we kept looking some over and as luck would have it later that evening we saw by far the best boar we had seen this season that still had a good coat on him. A little bit of peer pressure from the kid when we were looking it over through the spotter combined with wanting to stretch the legs on my new 7PRC that i hadnt hunted with yet personally (kids bear was the first animal with it), and the rest was history and I had a decent pumpkin head on the ground. Was one the longer stalks ive made on a bear, which is always fun as well.

In reality, I wish that the boy still had his tag and could have gotten that one, but he learned a good lesson in patience along with having a heck of a fun and busy last day out this spring lol.

Congrats and by the looks of the smile your boy is happy with his bear. He has many years ahead of him to shoot a bigger one than you lol

100% man, he's nothing but happy! From squirrels to moose and everything in between, that kid just loves every minute of being out hunting and fishing which is perfect for me lol.

Thanks all!

Great for you and your son.
36 bears in 5 days. That sounds really good. Much better than the 2 total I've seen this spring down south.

So awesome that you were able to enjoy this with your son. By far the best trips I have had lately are when my son is with me.
Speaking of which, we leave tmrw for Northern Sask fishing... will be awesome.

congrats to you both on great bears!

Outstanding job dad, kudos for teaching important life skills and bonding. Nice bears and hams are a bonus.

You did find a couple of great bears for your kids this year. Was great to see.
Was going to ask how you felt about adoption for the spring bear season !

If you're still getting out, hope you have some luck for yourself yet.

Thanks again all!

And yeah, it’s a different world down south. When I lived in Lethbridge it was tough to buy a bear. Different world entirely north of 16 for sure.

Cool story, thanks for sharing! I’m 47 and still have yet to fill a bear tag. I only spring bear a few days a year but I’ve been a fall big game hunter for many years and have taken everything (moose, elk, WT and mule) except a bear!? Spending this weekend on a solo hunt west of Sundre for the last few days that I’m available so fingers crossed I came across a shooter!
