Default 1911 holster

What do you guys use for handgun holsters? I have a few of the Blackhawk Serpa holsters that work great. And I've never had any problems with them. But with their known issues, I'd like to look at something else.

I think kydex would be more popular. Which I don't mind. But I was also interested in a leather holster.

This would be a hip holster. What would you guys recommend?

I've also got a couple of the Blackhawk Serpa holsters for my Sig P226. One for the belt and a drop leg rig. Never had an issue with them. I've also got a Galco leather OWB for a P229, and a Brigade Gunleather IWB for a P220. They all work fine for range work. I actually quite like the Serpa. I got an Alien Gear kydex for my P229, and I'm not in love with it.

Those two leather holsters are exactly what I was thinking about.

Tim from Solely Canadian makes some nice Kydex holsters, his shop is in Grand Forks, BC. He makes each holster to order, so there are lots of different color / pattern, and other options available. Downside is that current delivery times are around 6 weeks. I'm not sure how functional his website is, but it does show the options available. If you decide to order, contact him directly rather than his website.

I wouldn't consider 6 weeks too long of a wait. Thanks for the info I'll check him out.

Brigade Gunleather took me almost a year to get my holster, mag pouch, and belt. Quality is off the charts though. I got the standard M-11 IWB and the M-24 double mag pouch, plus an M-18 dress belt.

I figured out that a P220 is a lot of gun to carry IWB. but it is doable, and does conceal.

Bianchi, Galco, Aker De Santiago all make good leather holsters. I conceal carry a p320 x compact in a Desantis. Not bad but I liked the bianchi I had for my Glock 43 better.

So I ended up going with a leather holster from Galco. The colour is Havana which is kind of between the tan and the black.

The holster was very tight. Like so tight my 1911 was stuck in it. Their break in process is putting a sandwich bag or freezer bag over the pistol and keeping in the holster for a few hours.

I did this for a day and it fits perfectly now. Tight enough where it won't fall out. But easy to draw and reholster. When I hang it upside-down it doesn't even want to slide out. The holster is curved so it fits tight against me. I am very happy with it.

I had also ordered a heavy leather belt from Galco, but canceled at the last minute and went with a couple of open cary belts from Kore essentials.

I don't have pics of the belts yet because they are Xmas gifts to myself. But I'll post them after I open my presents.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

Nice Rig SB, I'm a big fan of Galco rigs too. Your rig is similar to the one for my P229. Great fit, very secure as you say. That 1911 of yours is a real looker too!

Thanks TC. Especially when looking at yours its hard to believe your pistol wouldn't fall right out. But like I said when I got mine, my 1911 was stuck in the holster. So far I'm very happy with the Galco.

Yeah, they actually do need to be stretched when you first get them. Comfortable to wear as well. I dunno if I'd want to carry a full size 1911 around though, that P229 is a wee bit smaller and lighter!

As an aside, on my rig, you can see there is a screw with washer through the leather, down towards the muzzle? That can be tightened or loosened to adjust tension/retention as well, which I like. You can tune it a bit to what you like.

Do you have any experience with the kore essentials belts? I originally wanted a nice leather belt. But didn't want it stretching and deforming over time from the weight of the 1911.

Plus I'm curious to see how their ratchet type of system works.

I got a cary belt from them, plus a lighter regular belt.
