I've had to dig into this since I'm heading to BC Friday morning to hunt with my son.
You can't bring any ammo or firearms on the plane as carry on.
Ammo must be either in a locked container or in the original factory boxes. They're concerened about the seperation of the ammo.
Rifles must be in a locked, opaque case with trigger locks on the rifles. You must have all paperwork for the rifles including your PAL.
I fly out tomorrow morning so we'll see how it goes. Plane leaves at 7am but I'm going to get there at 5 to make sure I have enough time should something go wrong.

No issues.
Put your guns in a locked case with trigger locks. Put the keys in your pocket as you may need to open it at the oversized counter.
Ammo in factory cases is the best but as long as they are in a case of some kind and not laying loose or moving around is what they are after. These travel in your other checked bag. Declare it as they put a sticker on it.
Have your paperwork is good advice....I've never been asked for it but it would be lousy if they did and you didn't.
Not sure if you're travelling with fuel bottles or stove. I had some hassles with "used" fuel bottles and a "used" dragonfly stove last year and it took a lot of whining to get through. Their complaint was that the fact that they had fuel in them at one point the "fumes" could ignite....I even offered to fill the bottles with water They were not going to let the stove on either as there might have been some remnants of fuel in the 3" feed line....WTF!!!!
Arggg....it was a hassle to say the least. Probably didn't help after I was getting frustrated while the "young lady" was going through the WHIMIS book to find out if white gas was flammable I probably shouldn't have asked her if she was "whimis qualified".

If you are caught trying to do that, you will likely be thrown off of the plane, and the police may very likely be waiting for you.

Make sure you declare it as well (tell the person who is giving you your ticket and she'll put a sticker on it).

Be certain to let the agent know there is ammo in the bag. I had a friend of mine escorted off a plane by some large gentlemen in uniform for failure to do so.

When I flew out of Whitehorse last time, they had a whole box full of loose ammo beneath the x-ray machine. I asked about it and they said it was from hunters that forget a few rounds in their pack or jacket. To them it was no big deal. I'm guessing in a southern city they wouldn't be so forgiving.
They tried to take a mushroomed TSX from me on my last flight to Toronto....lol

You haven't mentioned where and whom you're flying with. There a huge difference between flying with Air Canada to Africa and flying with Air North to the Yukon. I've flown with Air North, they totally accustomed to many firearms on board and a whole bunch or rednecks in cammo clothing filling the back half of the plane and having a good ol' time.

As an add on to my previous post, you do have to put your ammo in a case and have it labelled by the carrier. You should also put your firearm in an approved case. I suggest a Pelican case, which isn't cheap, but it will protect your firearm from baggage handlers. I also put locks on the case. Make no mistake about it, some of them are not firearm friendly, unless you're flying Air North. When I fly to the Yukon, I also remove the bolt and carry it in a separate luggage. Yes I do take extra precautions that may be unnecessary by law, but it makes checking in a lot easier and hassle free. Thus far, I've had no problems whatsoever. Good luck on your out of town hunt...

Original Package.
If flying on AC or Westjet, you have to sign a form declaring that the ammo is in it's origional package. Depending on where you are flying from, they may X-ray your bags and they can tell. BTW the people who X-ray the bags work for the security guys, not the airline so you never know how strict they will be. I travelled recently with a couple of boxes of shot shells and the dude checking them could tell that I topped off the box with a couple shells that were different from the rest. He didn't make a big deal about it, but could have. My advice, take it in the origional package and fill your plastic cases when you get there. As far as guns go most people don't realize that procedures differ from city to city even within the same Airline. Some want to see them, some want to see the paperwork, some could care less. My Dad got stuck a couple of years ago when he tried to check in with an expired PAL. You rarely win those arguments even if you are 100% correct.

Never had problems with rifles and ammo in checked baggage on international flights.
Mind you, it really depends on the destination and the political situation there at the time. Paperwork varies, allowable calibers vary, etc, etc. In some places you can even get in serious trouble just by bringing food with you across a border, or if you don't have the correct inoculations; but rifles at the same point might be no big deal. On the other hand, there are some places that you just can't bring hunting firearms, like Saudi Arabia.
Most difficult places though really have no history of large-scale big game hunting, or have had military problems in the recent past, or have become so politically screwed up that they're looking for any excuse at all to be *****s.

Well that is about the worst move a guy could make.
Air Canada, will nickle and dime you every step of the way, extra for the rifle, and lord knows what else.
I've stayed as far away from Air Canada since they made their policy change. WRT firearms
Unfortunatly sometimes they are the only airline to choose from.
Good luck

If I have any choice at all,I avoid Air Canada.I find that West Jet provides better service with less hassle.
