Default Ceramic Bobbin

I decided I would try a ceramic bobbin out. Saw it a Canadian tire for 13$ (might be the problem). My question to all the fly tyers out there... I can not seem to use it without breaking the thread. I bent the arms back to loosing the tension. I'm used to wrapping with the bobbin basically parallel with the hook, but I feel like I have to awkwardly wrap with the bobbin perpandicular to the hook to keep the thread from breaking. Maybe it's a lemon, but for new I'm back to my trusty old 3$ metal bobbin.

Canadian Tire sells bobbins? What brand?
If tension is a problem you can rub a bar of soap either on the spool or the bobbin.

Canadian tire I think should stick to tires. A good ceramic bobbin is a wonderful thing.

I've got 2 ceramics and a metal. I had another metal one that had a burr on the inside of it and would ALWAYS break the thread. Some bobbins just don't work, but I've had good luck with ceramic ones so far.

try a Rite bobbin if you're looking for a sweet ceramic at a decent price

Do yourself a favor, go to a fly shop and buy a decent bobbin. Toss that one, have fun tying instead of frustration. Like in any endeavour, decent tools make a difference

Spend some money if your serious about it.
My advice is the Nor-vice bobbins, buy a couple
And the extra spools. So much nicer to have auto
Rewind.

I agree with the others. Toss it and go spend a few bucks and get yourself a quality ceramic bobbin. Crappy Tire is no place to get "quality" fly tying tools. You will be way more happy getting one that works right from the start. There is no way a ceramic should be cutting your thread.

I have a Rite Bobbin that is absolutely amazing. I really like that the tension can be adjusted on the bobbin. But of course they are not cheap. You can still buy an inexpensive bobbin at The Fish'n Hole, BP, or Wholesale. They should work about 300% better than the CT one.

Here is the Rite Bobbin.

Buy your stuff from a fly store not a big box store. Good ceramic bobbins are worth a lot more than $13.00
