Default Elk Calling Tips

I would like to work on my elk calling over the winter and I am looking for advice on the best ways to do this. In the past I have resorted to watching videos and trying to copy the sounds but with mixed results. my bugling is semi OK most of the time but the cow calls are awful and I resort to a Hoochie.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

If you're finding the mouth reeds tough for cow call, I'd suggest the Easy Girl call from Wapiti River Outdoors.
I used it this year a brought in a young bull.

I think the best is pick up a cupel mouth reeds, get a DVD for your truck and listen to what you should sound like and practice when your driving that's what I do.

Practice practice and practice. Get a few different (or several calls.) watch elk hunting movies and practice while watching. Try mouth reeds. Have them in your mouth while driving and just keep on practicing.

When they're hot they'll come on just about any call, don't over analyze what you sound like too much. I cow call more then bugling. Don't call from out in the open, don't over call. I prefer to stay on the move. Lastly you have to play the wind or you'll get busted. Noise is ok, but if they get a wiff of your stink you're done.

PS I should add, I've had limited sucess So take my advice for what it's worth.

I try to sound weak if i'm using a bugle, stay in the shadows and play the wind right. Then it's just practice and timing. By timing i mean @$%#house luck.

There are some good CD's out there. I like Primos and one from Rocky Jacobson. Check out YouTube as well.
As far as calls go I really like the ones from Wapiti River Outdoors.

I think the ridge runner is one of the easiest reeds to use. I also like the Primos sonic dome calls but they bug the roof of my mouth after a while. Find single reed calls easier to use than double or triple.

I like to pop in a cd and practice on the way to work and back. My family appreciates me not doing it in the house.

Practice and more practice I know everyone says that but it's the best advice as fir calls
Bugling Bulls is my number one but primos puts out some good ones also
Bugling bull reeds and tubes and he makes amazing open reed Cow calls
Imakadabullcrazy is my fave that primos makes

Best advice on elk though is don't set up to call in only one spot your not duck hunting
And above all advice

SCOUT SCOUT SCOUT SCOUT

If u know the elk are there you'll hanmer Bulls I've hammered a lot of elk over the years and knowing where the elk are is key
Multiple herds
