anyone have a winchester 25-20? Anyone shoot one? Any information? I have one from my great grandfather. It appears to be in mint shape. My gradpa said it was rarely used. It is a model 53. any info would be appreciated. value as well.
My uncle used to keep a 53 Winchester behind the door in the porch on his farm. It was used almost exclusively for skunks and porcupines that wandered around the farm. It really helped cut down on the quills and smell of his dogs.
The 25-20 is best used for critters of this size at a reasonably close range. Not really a caliber you would want to use on big game.
As for it's value that is hard to determine. If it is completely original it will command a high price but if it has been altered, customized or refinished it will reduce it's value considerably.
I too am not an expert in prices but if it is original you have a rifle of considerable value. I would suggest you look after it, keep it oiled, and keep it safely stored and you will have great Winchester to pass along some day.
And don't hesitate to take it out and shoot it. Enjoy it. You may have a little trouble buying ammo but I have seen some at the gun shows.
