Default Upland advice for Southern Alberta

Hi All,

I am wondering if I can be pointed in the right direction for a fall hunt in Southern Alberta. I have spent all my life hunting the northern part of the province, so time for a change. I have a dog, GWP, and will get the appropriate county maps, etc., but which ones? I am also looking for an area that may be close to a campground so I can use my trailer as home base.

Not looking for someone's special palce, jsut a good place to start or recommendations for grazing reserves, DU land, etc.

Regards

Mark

If you are looking to hunt pheasants, go to the pheasant hatchery in Brooks and they will give you a map of all the release sites if your in to that. If you like to hunt ducks and geese, stop in at the Brooks DU office and I will give you a map of all our water projects and point you in the right direction.

Good pheasant hunting between Brooks and Drumheller. Just find a coulee with cover. I was amazed at how many pheasants are out in the Drumheller area, once you drop into the river valleys.

Brooks is a good place to start. Release sites and lots of EID land to explore for wild birds. It gets busy but with a bit of pr you can access private land too. Camping available. I hotel it there every year with my springer and always have a load of fun. Get the county map and a Eastern Irrigation District Map. and a Mapart map book. All will help.

Brooks is the worst place to look for birds. Too popular so you get too many hunters going there. I would check out in the Magrath area or the drumheller area, even the medicine hat area. Yes Taber can be good too if you know where to look and yes a dog is essential in this area. Although I have seen it done without one you dont have near the success you do if you had a dog.

Default Taber

Vin you may be right ,perhaps a dog is not essential , all that truck traffic
could be bad for his health...
I was totally taken aback at the number of upland birds in the Taber area

for the small amount of cover there is there ... Its best to wear some

tough clothing as you can be sprayed by gravel on a regular basis from passing trucks ...when you are working the best cover .

Local residents have enjoyed bag limits of in excess of 399 birds .

Now I am going to assume that this is yearly as that would be a lot of birds even

for a crack shot with a world class Dog ...

I have been assured by our affable host that I have not been to the most productive

areas in the region ... Perhaps I will have to get a better guide

the next time I am in the Taber area.

I look forward to enjoying the hospitality of the area , this year

on what I am sure is going to be an annual event...
