Ipad for hunting?
anyone use an ipad for hunting? I have been thinking that it would be cool to use to track stuff like places that hold birds, trail cam and treestand locations etc. is there an app that you can use a satellite image and then mark certain points on it?

I have used the satellite view on the maps app that is on the iPad for marking locations of deer. You can use a drop pin on a location and then add it to your book marks to be recalled later. This works for where sheds are found as well. I use the satellite view quite a bit on the iPad and my phone while scouting.

IPAD App
There's a Cabela's recon app..it was free last i saw...pretty good zoom and great detail, tons of different maps from sat, hybrid, topo, and you can track your movements with it.
and if you hunt in BC there's an app that keeps the up to date regs for there.

I should clarify that the app is called Maps+ . It has a few more options than the maps app that comes on the iPad or iPhone.

I like to go out and find new places, and store them in a thing called memory. It ain't perfect, and sometimes I need to go back there just to get the memory to release bits of information that I stored long ago... but I like it that way.

forgive an old geezer... but are you talking about going hunting with an Ipad in your pack??? LOL No thanks. I have a GPS that can mark any spot I want.
Low-tech alternative: mark the spot on your paper topo.

Just kidding.

Not a bad idea, but you just know that for some "after seeing" would migrate to "after shooting" or "when seeing a F&W truck".

I do Alot of coyote hunting and thought it would be neat to mark locations of stands and track my results and to plot which areas produce the most kills or dogs called.

I wouldn't want to pack something that big around ever. Like said before a gps will do the same thing then you can go to google earth and plot your stands on there.. Much better and way less to pack.. You have the blaster right?? Why pack more..

Haha just sold the blaster. Got the CS24B on the way from foxpro as we speak! iPad would sit in the truck and I would put in my findings after I called the stand

Map Recces
IPAD works great for doing some map recces, prior to going out the to the field. Obviously doesn't beat walking the area. you can get maps easily for all areas, without having to drive around the city looking for them, and you can get different types on the same app..ie Sat, Topo, Road
As well you can get a memory card reader to plug into the one port on the side, so you can go out can check trail cams on the spot.

Yup how about an old fashion hunting journal in a book....something your grand kids would actually like to see way down the road.

Grandfather's camp has journals dating from present day to back to the late fifties in it back in NB. Must go and back those up on my next trip home. Great family history.

All our camps in Harvey Mcadam and Miramichi have Guest books and it is a requirement to write something in them during your visit.

It's meant to be used as a tool not as a keepsake. There is no reason you can't use a tool and still have keepsakes, like photos and journals.

But could an IPhone replace a gps (at least for day tripping), Phone/gps/camera device multi tasking is always handy.

Nothing beats an iPad or iPhone if your within service, you are always looking at google earth with the marker of yourself moving as you walk, you can see everything, plot any points you want etc. If you could run the iPad / iPhone straight off satellite the gps devices would be a thing of the past completely.
Not to mention the browsing the web, viewing radar imagery of storm fronts, checking email while your sitting In a stand, and viewing your trail cam pics on the spot.
I"ll trash talk the latest gadgets as much as the next guy, but these devices are not going away, I"d say it won't be too long before you will be able to see your actual tree stand in the google earth pics as the quality gets better.

To answer a question above, you don't need a special app, the standard map app that is on your iPhone works fine.
Biggest thing I try to do these days is leave the gps / phone in your pocket as much as possible, so if you lose them or they die, your not next.

Plus it's a great way to clutter up the Grand kids house, with stuff they may not want. But feel too guilty to throw away, because it was, "Grampas."
An ipad or iPhone, is a great hunting tool. Google map at your fingertips, camera, even note pad. I use my iPhone often. Especially in a new area, if I want to cover some ground, I can go to Google map, and see if a trail actually goes anywhere, rather than walk for 3 hours to a dead end.
