I am thinking about trying one of these units to film a bow hunt. I wasn't really impressed with the shot quality on youtube when these are attached to or as a stab. has anyone tried a headstrap and what have been you results? ; i usually hunt alone so having a cameraman would be rare.

I haven't tried the head strap but I have used the GoPro with a chest harness. It works great.

The only problem with the camera for hunting is that it needs lots of light for good colour and resolution. As soon as it gets a little dark, or there's big contrasts in shadow and dark, the image gets crappy.

Some poor video you'll see on Youtube is because of poor compression, not the actual camera.

I have two of them and love them!!!! Like the previous poster said though you need lots of light for quality footage. Here's a link to a movie I just finished.

http://vimeo.com/m/45561339

I plan on using them both on waterfowl hunts this fall to give a different perspective. I also have a Sony ax2000 and a cannon t2i so the go pros will only be used in good light.

I can't speak highly enough about them so if you have any questions let me know.

your exactly right, I bet 80-90% of the people who post on YouTube don't know the first thing about uploading a file worth watching. I see it all the time on different editing forums where guys can't figure out how keep the quality after uploading.

a good waterfowl video from the point of view of the dog.

Been thinking of grabbing a couple of these and putting them on the hounds while rabbit hunting.

On this video I actually did most of the editing in iMovie 11. Once I take the footage I import the footage into GoPro's free editing software (Cineform) where I am able to cut the clips, boost colors ect. and then only download those clips instead of wasting hard drive space on the others that won't be used.

I then import the clips into iMovie and finish the editing process. This is only my second time using iMovie and it's pretty basic, very user friendly program. I just got a copy of Final Cut Pro X so I'll have access to more options.

For you guys using them with your dog,

How are you mounting them?

I had mine out at Ghost Lake on the weekend for a test run. I used the helmet mount straps to tie it to his harness.

It worked great up until he needed to shake the water out of his coat.... the friction things on the helmet mount came loose ... luckily he was on shore at the time!

I use the Avery Boaters Dog vest and on the top it has handles where I use the helmet mount as well. The nice thing about the vest is that there is a ring 3" forward of the handles and I am able to leash the GoPro to the ring. Unfortunately, I didn't do this on the first one I had still waiting for the season water hole to dry up so I can go try and find it.

For field hunting, I am going to use the same vest and cut two small slots in the chest portion to attach the same helmet strap to vest. With any luck I hope to get some good shots of Daisy getting some retrieves.

Here was my original set up. It was the chest plate with a additional arm to get the GP above the dogs head while laying down in the boat. This is the one that is at the bottom of the marsh as she some how swam out of the chest strap.

You're right - it can take a long time to figure out - browsing forums, trying different settings then converting/rendering files. A person also needs to have an idea what they're looking for to spot the loss of image quality.

The good news is, help is out there (right on the GoPro forum - but also try Creative Cow) and once you have it set, save it and forget it.

Go Pros (Or other POV cameras) are great for B-Roll (side) footage. If you are planning on filming your whole hunt with one it might get a bit boring. If you are planning on using it for your bow for example have it facing you mounted on your bow and have another camera (not a POV) that is filming the critter.
