Default coyotes hunting In strathcona county

Hullo there. Can someone tell me if I can take out some yotes In the 248 zone with centrefire cartridges? .243 or whichever I grab first. Not sure if it has to be muzzeloader , shotgun or just bow. Its on 40 acres so I'm easily 200yds from anyone. And yes the coyotes are a problem, with their being a lot of children through out the day on this property.
Thanks.

Depends what area...there are no firearm discharge areas....best call F&W to get the answer from them, also get the name of the Officer you speak with.

Shotgun , bow and muzzleloader only. But if you need to get rid of some I trap in the county and I am looking for a few new spots if you have some land around that does not have dogs nearby. I had one friend of mine want to get rid of some last year and it started with a goal of 20 for the year and ended up with catching 74 of them lol

I think the primative weapons applies only to hunting big game and game birds only. There are areas in the county where you can not discharge a weapon (bows included) so check the county website. It would be a good idea to print them off because many of the RCMP are under the impression you can not shoot centerfire in the county.

Thanks for your guys feedback. After 7 phone calls to F&G, bylaw, alberta regulations, and county offices, etc. I was directed to an alf koloniski? Who apparently knows everything about the subject. I guess I will find out tomorrow. Just cant believe how these representatives of the county know so little about their regulations.

You can't believe it?
Are you new to the county?

For fun, start reading some of the bylaws that have been passed. Try figuring out what was written. When you have it figured, show some official what your pov on it is and watch stunned silence.

Every time I see Vern hartwell I give him the gears for putting his signature on so many stupid rules in past years.

Only applies to big game, but there areas where there is no discharge at all. Alf will tell you exactly what page in the regs you need to look at, he's Strathcona county's problem wildlife guy, big advocate for firearms ownership and wildlife population control, nice guy too. I had him out shooting yotes and beavers before my PAL came through.

Agreed, A call to Alf is a must. You can apply for a firearms discharge permit through the By-Law off in Strathcona County and it will permit you to use a shotgun. It used to cost around $10.00. I've applied for a few in the past and had no problem getting one. I was only 2 miles out of Sherwood Park. I think one is hooped if you live in a subdivision but you're on 40 acres so it shouldn't be a problem. The permit is only good for 2 weeks if memory serves me correct. I ended up getting a few over a two month period. Damn chicken stealers.

Basically this...it's all pretty straight forward if you look at regs and county website. As stated before, don't try talking to a county rep because they won't have a clue.

I was hoping someone had found something concrete & declarative on this one. Walking an RCMP officer through the inductive reasoning of why my position is solid is something I was hoping to avoid.

Still though, if this is the firmest we've been able to nail this one down, then that's what I'll roll with.

To the OP, the best piece of advice that has been posted on this thread is to talk to Alf Kolonski. He's in charge of problem/nuisance wildlife in the county and knows what he is talking about. Ph # 780-464-8111. Also pick up the special regs that apply to Strathcona County.
Iv'e mentioned before that Strathcona County has the most confusing regs I've ever studied. I'm trying to post a pic. of a section of this years Strath Regs that were updated in July 2015.
Outside of Sherwood Park, rural hamlets and the "Special Control Area", Provincial and Federal regs apply. And of course you can't hunt on County property.
Confused yet? Please remember that these regs only apply to Hunting in Strathcona counties hunting season which is from Sept 1 to Dec.7 2015.
I'm posting this on the fly while watching the grey cup, but bottom line is that you can use a center fire rifle in a lot of area's in Strath county.

OK, that's gold information, E - thanks again.

I'll definitely be outside the Special Control Area and the prohibited discharge areas and won't be on County property.

OK, literally a few seconds searching and I found what I needed - thanks for the nudge everybody.

Quote:
The discharge of firearms in Strathcona County is controlled by the County's Firearm Control Bylaw 11-2007 and is enforced by the RCMP. Firearms may not be used for hunting in Sherwood Park, rural hamlets and on County property.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife, Edmonton District, is responsible for wildlife management and enforcement of Alberta's Wildlife Act.

The use of firearms is restricted within the Special Control Area. In this area, shotguns and muzzle loading rifles, bows and arrows, and cross-bows may be used to hunt white-tailed deer during this year's Strathcona White-tailed deer hunt from October 25 to December 7.

Outside of the Special Control Area, Sherwood Park and rural hamlets, Strathcona County does not have bylaws restricting the use of firearms. Provincial and federal regulations apply in these areas.

The County is divided into three different Wildlife Management Units (WMUs). Different regulations apply to each.

Hunting game birds with a shotgun on road allowances is not permitted in the County. Strathcona County is a Specialized Municipality and, because of this designation, all road allowances are considered County property. There is no hunting allowed on any County property.
