Lol...no, they are fully water proof and insulated...some have more insulation then others..so pick your grade accordingly. You can just wear runners if yo want. The Socks do all the work...the "Boot" is just an outer peocetive layer....I tried em and now I have a few pairs depending on the season. They work great for me! I guess to see your confusion now...ya they only go up so far...lol...so past mid shin...yer gonna get wet. Just read the OP a little better...so not a good "Up to your waist in water/muck option" I was just tired of big heavy insulated boots...so I shifted to these for late/early season hiking and fishing the shore lines. But ya, if you want to go deep in...you will have to try another option I guess..
