Default School me on traditional archery

I have shot a compound off and on for almost 30 years. I struggle at times to be as consistent as I would like. I have taken an interest in traditional, as it is much more basic and you don’t need a lot of stuff. I am drawn to more basic ways of doing things, as you typically get a better understanding of the overall process.

The questions I have are what is your choice and why longbow vs recurve. What differences do you find between them, what shoots better and why.

Is it reasonable to just pick up a bow, some arrows and finger tab/glove and have at it?

Any thoughts on bow selection? I would like to use it to hunt at some point so thinking 40-45 pounds for now, I have a 29-30” draw length and am around 6’2” tall.

Thanks!

Been shooting trad since the mid 60's except for a few years in the early 70's when Mechanical Advantage equipment became popular. Blew up 3 of them in short order and never looked back.

I've had a lot of custom Recurves and longbows over the years. Nothing faster than the speed of sound.

The last 15yrs I've been shooting Bear TD Recurves and currently use a older B mag riser w #1 limbs.

We (Alberta Traditional Bowhunters Assoc) just had our last outdoor shoot August long weekend. That would have been a good chance to try a variety of bows.

I would suggest trying the few "pro" shops around. Hang out on Leatherwall, Rokslide, and Archery Talk. All have trad sections.

If near Calgary PM me. I could let you try the few that I have to start.

Thanks for all of the information.

I have done a bunch of digging over the past few days and think I would like to try a hybrid longbow. The problem is price… for something I don’t know how it will work out I don’t want to shell out a significant amount, but don’t want junk either. I have found one in the US, that looks really good, but cost and shipping time are playing into the equation.

If I’m down Calgary way and have time I would love to try out the options you have, thanks for that. Of course once I try something it could completely change what I am thinking above, lol.

Interested to hear as much more as anyone is willing to give.

We are almost twins as for build you and I, I've started shooting a recurve since spring and a couple guys here on the forum have been very helpful. I shoot a PSE Shaman 62 in and @ 28in it is 45# , so with my 30.in draw I'm probably about 50#.. I shot compound for 38 years and had to go to a release with my last one..I'm so happy to be back shooting a tab and fingers , I look forward to this fall and setting out with my recurve..haven't picked my compound up since switching .
