Question A Question For The Tacoma Owners 👈🤠

It looks like I'll be pulling-the-trigger on a used Tacoma sometime soon. I've mostly focused on looking at the latest generation (2016+ / 3.5L V6), but I can save a good chunk of change if I went with a Tacoma of the previous generation (<2015 / 4.0L V6).

What are your thoughts on the Pros & Cons of these two generations of Tacomas ❓

Thanks

Selkirk

I have a 2017 now, a 2014 before. I liked the 2014 more, the 4.0l with the 5 speed was better than the 3.5l with the 6 speed. I've had a few problems with the 2017, if you find a good 14 or 15 go for it. The 17 might get a little better fuel economy but hardly noticeable.

I don't really have an opinion on which is better (I have a 2005 4.0 and have driven a 2019 and couldn't really find that much has changed). I really like them both. I would look into the frame recall on them however. It covered an awful lot of trucks over a wide range of years but it is over now. I took mine in "just in case " last July (thinking that it wouldn't make the cut) but it did. I'm currently waiting for my new frame to be delivered to the dealership. The price tag will be $16,000 picked up by Toyota Canada. Whether the frame was replaced will probably have an effect on the used asking price.

Default Taco

Mine is a 2005 bought used in 2009 and has 260K on it. Have enjoyed it very much. Just did rear seals/bearings/rear brakes and had to wait 16 days to get the parts in (supposed to be OMC at dealership). It failed the frame recall and I’ve been waiting for seven months now at same dealership (southpointe Toyota Calgary) to have the frame come in. This is holding up any plans for selling/trading up and is getting very frustrating, not to mention aggravating. Have looked at but not driven the ‘19 and ‘20 model year tacos and corollas. Huge price for comparable taco & not sure if I will even trade up to a Toyota at this point because of lack of potential service - especially the frame recall. Earlier it needed recalls on undercoating and springs. Both were done quickly and no problems. It seems we are in a different economy now - nobody seems to want to inventory parts or provide service - selling new is the name of the game.

From what I understand, the only Big differences between the last two generations of Tacomas are the engines & transmissions. Other than those differences, they are close to being the same truck.

I don't plan on buying a Tacoma any older than a 2012 model, so the frame issues of the older models won't be an problem for me.

Cheers,

Selkirk

My family owns 2007 and 2018 Tacomas. I like my 2007 basic 4x4. My wife's Tacoma TRD 2018 is nice truck, but way too smart for me.

I'd go for a 2014 or 2015 Tacoma as well.

The 3.5L is a dog if you tow anything. Max horsepower and torque are really high in the RPM range. 2200 RPM (where you usually drive/operate) is very gutless.

I'm going to check out a '14 Tacoma tomorrow. 👍🤠

I’ve got a 2010 v6 4L and it has more power then the newer version engines, more fuel efficient? No. But then that’s the trade off. That being said it is still decent gas mileage. I’m waiting for the 2022 version to see what’s in store before I upgrade as the truck has not changed much other than what was stated. The rumour is either some sort Diesel engine option or hybrid engine option will be available. Hoping for the diesel but that has been a rumour for a very long time. Will probably be a hybrid in the future.

I have a 2012. Absolute beast; many rough miles. Just routine maintenance that’s easy to do yourself. Just upgraded the struts last summer, as a seal was blown. But that’s normals wear and tear.

Oh actually the only annoying thing that went was the clock spring which sounds fairly common in toyotas. Easy fix, but part is expensive if you go oem
