Default Rem 870 mag express question

Can I shoot slugs out of this gun or are the chokes too narrow and split the gun open?

Like I said I have an 870 express magnum 28" barrel

No problem at all to shoot slugs out of your 870.
Use a bit more open choke and you will likely find an accuarcy increase, about IV usually works well.

I've got one and have done it on a few times without any issues. However if it's something you're going to do on a regular basis I would get a rifled slug specific barrel with iron sights. They're much more accurate, faster and the sabot slugs are more aerodynmaic and retain their eneergy fartther downrange. Good luck!

Smile They are both right!

A man would have to be desperate for punishment to shot those things.

Let us know what you think after you touch off a few. If you have a brother in law let him in on this too.

The reason there are only 5 in a box is because no one has ever need more.

If it is a super mag, it should be threaded for RemChokes. The only modern 870's I have seen without threaded chokes are cyl. bore, or rifled.

I have been told an IC choke is best for rifled slugs. You need a rifled barrel or rifled choke for sabot slugs.

You will be looking to use an Improved Cylinder choke and rifled slugs. With that it's no worries. Mind if I ask why your shooting slugs out of a bird gun?

Just because it has a longer barrel, no rail for a scope, and maybe even a wood stock, does not relegate it to bird shot only!
I use my O/U 20 with slugs in the shotgun zones at times.....

we have 2 badgers that are nipping on the horses legs in the field and last time we used some 1 1/8th target loads and it ****ed him off but didnt kill it. So now time for the slugs. I absolutly hate badgers make a mess of the fields and hurt the critters also thinking of a few gophers would like to be introduced to mr. slug

You may have an easier time killing them with some Dead Coyote loads.
They are loaded with No.T shot and do very well, easier to hit them with that stuff than a slug!

I would defeintely suggest goign with shot over a slug! Especially for badgers! Some T shot or even BB should do the trick.

Uh, YUP!
take one small bore short range varmint cartirdge, add it to the apporiate lightweight rifle, and stir frequently!!
Seriously though, any big goose load of 2's, BB's, or heavier out of a 3 1/2 incjher shpould do nicely.
