Default Bad genetics?

I hunt in an all white tail area and last year on my camera I got this young buck captured and I wanted to watch his progress.

So this is him last year

This year Ive had my camera out since April and not much activity. I got some pics of him "sprouting" but thats not the question.

I only got ONE pic of him with growth and to me he doesn't look like a white tail so I would like everyones input please!

Maybe I've captured a mulie?

well then... I see this could be a learning curve on identifying species correctly before the shot!

Default Whitetail

Yeah, tough picture, but I'm 75% sure it's a whitetail. If it's a Mulie, his bad gene's are in his ear development. Small ears on a sketchy photo and ya gotta go Whitetail, IMO.

Yea I was really disappointed on the picture as well. last year he was all over my cameras, but this year the majority of the pics were of a doe and her fawns. I pulled the camera to a new spot because he's not a shooter but Im thinking of putting one back to keep an eye on him! I find it exciting to see what he could become!

Am I missing something?

That animal looks 100% WT and that includes the ears.
Never occured to me for a second that he might be anything but white tail.

I just would have thought a distinct beam would be more announced. He's still forked. So would he become more distinct next year?

X4 100% whitetail. He's pretty knarly looking. And based on what I can see from his picture in velvet he's about 5 years old, I'm not sure it's the same buck in the picture as before. As far as bad genetics? As far as what b&c is concerned yes... As far as what may be considerd an interesting trophy? Well that kind of beauty is in the eye of the bow-holder.

It looks like his left horn is upside down.. Pretty cool looking, and upon further review I change 5 to 4

Antlers..especially on a fork horn or 3 point are not a reliable way to determine species.

Even larger WT will fork from time to time.

The best advise I ever got was...shoot the animal...not the antlers.

yeah, that is like said above, 100% WT. as for reference with the horns, never judge a deer by the Horns.... they can lead you astray very fast....

Default WT

For sure WT -- I have a shed from Sask that Id love to put on here but not sure how -- He looks like a 180 but has both WT and mulie characteristics -- Long eye guards -lots o points and he paddles in the middle like a small moose -- Ive been told he is WT so off to Sask I go

Cheers

Ian
