Our stories from Wainwright 2018
We had without a doubt, the hardest hunt of my life yesterday lol. Burnin boot leather in the annex after several inches of fresh snow- will surely make your muscles and joints remind you you’re no young pup anymore. 12.5 km is what my tracker said we put on. We got on a fresh crossing right before noon and hiked it about 2.5km till we got on them. It was blizzard conditions on the way in, snow blowing hard right in our faces from the west. I located the herd about 400m to the North off a high point, and we closed the gap to 120m. Made the shot and found him expired 50m from where I shot him. My first bull elk, and a hunt that neither my fiancé or myself will soon forget.
At the checkout we were stoked to see another set of hunters got a great bull also, just south of where we got ours. We heard one another’s shots in fact. I believe they’re both 5x5 with the other groups a touch larger than ours. Congrats to them! I believe it was also that gents first bull elk as well.
We spent the time breaking ours down in the bush, as we couldn’t get the truck within 150m. The sled came in handy, but I underestimated how large these animals are. We spent the extra time getting every edible piece, and made it to the HCS well after dark. The pain we will be feeling for a few days was well worth what we got out of the hunt, and will be a bittersweet reminder of the memorable cap to our 2018 season.
For what it’s worth, the folks running the show for the hunt on camp wainwright are all top shelf individuals, and as a group they are incredible to deal with. I’ve heard the rumors of what a gong show this hunt has been in the past, but I can attest to the fact that our experience was amazing. We will look forward to our draw results in future years, and hopefully next year our 5 year old son will join us.

Just curious what the draw wait is for elk in wainwright ? Is it a separate draw for the base either species elk . Or do you use up your regular prioritys ? Just wondering I don’t have regs or draw booklet handy .

It’s a draw zone within the either or elk draw code, it’s a separate code... check the draw book to see what you can do. The choices are antlered OR antlerless OR either/or draw codes. Wainwright is similar to the Cypress Hills draw.

We loved it as well... We were there last week for cow moose, but not successful in harvesting an animal.... But loved it still.... Well run.

Heading up tomorrow for 2nd rifle...first timer.
Q: Does the orientation start at 7am each morning? Doors open at 6am as in past years?
Q: Never seen this mentioned in any posts, so assuming it's a no-go. Are ground blinds or tree stands allowed?

Yes but they have to be removed each day I believe, I would flag it and I wouldn’t use a tree stand during the rifle season personally.

Were talking about Alberta’s Premier road hunt here ol son. There will be no ground blinding or treestanding. You hunker down behind the wheel of that Chevy and don’t let up.

kinda funny that there are as many negative comments about "truck hunting", yet so many positive comments about Wainwright. there are foot hunters, but i would say the majority are truck hunters during the hunt.
back to the same comments about the advantage of being able to cover ground in a truck. the camp is over 220 square miles.

Now my only regret from the whole trip... is that once we had the elk all quartered out, backstraps and tenderloins out, neck and both racks of ribs in the sled ready for the 100m hike to the truck... I didn’t stop and take a photo of Tash. She was not only carrying the hunting pack, but also the caped out head on her shoulders. That woman blows my mind with what she can accomplish, and this final hunt of our 2018 season is no exception. Having a photo of her packing that out, uphill mind you, would have been the best part of that day. A regret I will not make again, we must take more photos. We had our work cut out and we were both exhausted by the end of it. Most challenging and rewarding hunt of my life this far!

Nice bull I that’s the only animal I didn’t see when I was on primitive saw everything else but bull elk congratulations

Thank you! We saw several bull and cow moose, countless deer of both species and sex, even a porcupine! But this was the first elk we saw too haha! He was in a bachelor group with about 9 other elk, all about the same size or Smaller. What a hunt. Thanks again!

No point in getting out of your truck unless your hunting in the Annex, you could walk for miles then a truck just drives right by ya and all the progress you made is for nothing. The only success you are going to have is in the truck. I’m pretty confident in that.
