Hollow point bullets for elk
I accidently bought (2) boxes of hollow point .300 WMN and cannot return them. I've never used hollow point bullets before and primarily hunt elk. I've read mixed reviews for using hollow point rounds and they seem like a good option for deer, but how do these work for elk being a much tougher thicker skinned animal. Should I just save these for target shooting or are they still a good option for elk hunting?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

" hollow point" is pretty broad.
Are they monometal like BsrnesTTSX , Match bullets like Seirra Match Kings, and what is the weight?
Depending on the type , they can be quite effective on the biggest critters that walk the Earth.

What, no typical AO response yet? Fine then. I'll be That Guy.
'Those bullets are absoltely WORTHLESS for hunting, it'd be criminal to badly wound an animal with them!! I will do you a solid buddy favor and take the lot off your hands for $25 a box, and that's being generous because you're an AO brother!'
It had to be said.

Just side note on 300 wmn, I quit using my rifle as found way to much gun, would blow major hole in elk when shot them at closer ranges. Now use 7mm gun. I would guess 300 with almost any lead or copper would do the job.

I have used copper monolithic (monometal, solids, whatever you want to call them) since sometime in the 90s.
Phenomenal terminal performance, near 100% weight retention
Arguably best of all - no lead in your meat and no lead in the gut pile biomagnifying up the predator food web.
I moved to these when I saw an xray of a deer shot in the neck with a traditional cup and core bullet. At the time I was using corelock and nosler partitions
Lead bullets fragment far more than I realized.

The main advice I would give is that these style of bullets tend to expand very reliably when they are traveling as fast as possible.
I used 160s in my cup and core bullets but now use 140s in the TTSX/TSX line. The 160 TSX did not expand as reliably as the 140s.
