Default Government approves Westjet take over of Sunwing

Looks like it’s a done deal now. News just said it’s approved.

If Westjet makes Calgary their hub… I’m hoping service and flights will improve drastically.

Could someone please clarify for me why the government has to approve this purchase? Isn’t it one company buying another?

Competition reasons.

Still remember my trip back from Cuba, the seat was so worn and uncomfortable I finally sprung for one of their blankets, to survive the trip.

We just flew a WestJet to and from the Caribbean island and both wife and me swear not to fly the WestJet again! They for sure have the most uncomfortable seats that feel like a wooden bench! My ars is still hearting/sore from a flight!
The selection of food on the plane is just terrible, we ended up eating some beef jerky because we were so hungry! Didn’t want to eat the junk food like chocolate bars or chips…
I remember that even air Canada had much more comfortable seats and better food selection…

And I avoid Air Canada, because of too many delayed or canceled flights. At least with West Jet , I was usually on the flight that I booked, and not delayed too long.

Not to mention it is a 50/50 chance if your luggage shows up on the same plane... AC is brutal and I avoid them at all costs.

Luggage is brutal with all airlines these days, lol! This was the first time that we traveled with carry on only for two weeks tropical vacation! Wife couldn’t believe until the last moment that we can pul it off. I had 2 pairs of socks, 2 underwear’s, 3 t-shirts and one golf short and 3 pairs of shorts- one for the beach and two for going out. We did have a washer at the condo that we rented.
Really liked it travelling with carry on only, we were in and out of the airports in no time!

WestJet is as bad as any other airline. They cancelled a hole bunch of flights in January just because they didn’t have enough pilots. People got stranded left and right. Don’t kid yourself- the “old” WestJet mentality and culture is long gone.

That's BS. And occasional issues aren't isolated to one over the other.

That's all you could fit???!!!

I could fit that in a grocery bag.

We travel carry on only frequently including multi-week trips, I can fit a week's worth of clothes easily. Plus swimmers, flip flops, workout gear, and stuff... I always laugh outside CUN or SJD when people are rolling out their multiple enormous cases - like what do they have in there!!! What are they planning on doing?!

Westjet used to be little airline that could, but not so much anymore,
Might as well save your money and go with an ULC like Flair or Lynx.

I haven't flown recently, so I can only go from past experiences, if Westjet has become anywhere near as bad as Air Canada, then we no longer have any reliable airlines in Canada.

WestJet needs to get their poop in a group, their flight tracking website is horrible, just yesterday I was picking up my SIL and her sister coming back from Victoria, she texted me to say they we delayed leaving Calgary, not sure how long. I said no worries I'll watch the flight and get the updated info. It was scheduled for departure at 12:45, then delayed to 13:20, then to 13:50 then to 14:20 at 15:40 she called me from the airport here in Lloydminster saying they just landed, I booted it out to get them. The thing is that at 15:30 when I checked it showed that flight was still delayed in Calgary, never did say departed, it went from delayed to arrived.

On my recent trip noticed a trend, people are apparently scared crap less, to the point the overhead bins were filled to capacity and Westjet offered free bag check. I took advantage. No problems and I didn't have to drag my back pack all over Vancouver.

As hit or miss that Sunwing could be, I'll miss their free checked bags and $25 upgrade to larger seating, priority check-in and boarding, and priority luggage offloading. There's no way WestJet will keep that going.

Well hopefully this will make it easier to fly.
When I heard that one company had grounded aircraft and then the company right beside them had aircraft leaving half full to same destinations I just shook my head.

The size of the bag you can carry on now is big and it’s the only way to go.

Wait for last minute deals, grab and go, no waiting for luggage that may or may not arrive.

But some like to take the kitchen sink too

Default 3 weeks in Europe

We got back just before winter started and only had carry on luggage. Did Australia the same way. Works great.

We just got back from Malaysia, wife and I each had a small back pack as carry on, we had 7 flights in total and had no issues.
But then you see people with 3 small carry on suitcases, a massive sun hat and bags of duty free booze and they are the ones hogging the overhead bin so no one else can use them.

Probably now just need to add $1000 bill to your Sun Wing vacation with West Jet. Less competition = higher prices.

Yup. That is BS. I flew a s$&@ load for business and pleasure over the years, primarily on AC and never ever had a significant problem. Last flight in December AC flight to Curaçao was flawless and they compted us free food, drinks and wifi because we helped a senior with her pre-board Covid declaration required by Curaçao.

I was going to ask the same thing. Private companies. Why should the Government have any say in it. They control way too much already.

Agreed. This isn't like Telus buying out Bell, Rogers, and Shaw then planing to double the rates and you're messed as there are no other options. This is one relatively small airline wanting to buy out a much smaller airline.
