Scent wax or strips for lab Pup's bumpers

so yea..... wife got a new black lab.

Fetch inside with the inside bumper is good. She's 13 weeks and rits a 50/50 soft mouth situation.

Outside bumper..... well.... I can see her doin a chomp on it when she initially gets it and on the retrieve.

I've introduced her to mallard wings and pheasant wings this week. She goes bonkers for them..... but she'll chomp em pretty hard so I'm reeling back on that for a bit.

I did duct tape the wings to both bumpers to see what she'd do... but its too much exciting stuff I guess. She will lead retrieve fairly ok.....but her puppy brain short circuits when off lead.

So..... the wings are intro'd as 'fun stuff' and short lead retrieves (maybe 3-4 times only every second day).

Inside fetch bumper is totally fun for her... and soft mouth drop is her main operation......

so I was thinking.... getting liquid or wax scent for inside time?

anyone have thoughts on scent use/applications for retrieval bumpers?


or.... she;d just 13-14 weeks.... I gots lots of time....

only thing I have ever scented a bumper on is dead ducks, rub them, that's it.
teaching marking is trusting your eyes not your nose. Highly recommend Hillmann dvd in how to raise a retriever puppy, by the time your formalize training he or she is already doing it for the most part. right now it just about getting exposure to everything including lots of swimming and being curious outdoors checking everything out and socialize socialize socialize.

Prey drive is gets them going at this age - not so much scent IMO.
Rough house a little with the bumper - maybe play a little tug of war and get them excited for the dummy and the game you are playing.

Then throw it 5 or 10 feet away.

You can gradually increase as the intensity grows. My pup at that age didn't really show a lot of desire to retrieve - but he is a maniac now. It will come - give him time. Socialize and expose them to new things. Cows, loud noises, fireworks, etc

I use the Bird Down grouse scent on my german longhair pointer pup's dokken quail dummy. Increased his enthusiasm for retrieving and it works great for helping him develop his air scenting ability.
