Default Careful what you say...scary.

Last night a friend of mine sent out an email (SHAW) to his family members that one of their family members had passed from Covid on the weekend.
This morning he received an email from SHAW stating their condolences on his families loss.

Now that is downright spooky. Always knew email was not secure but to have Shaw actively reading them is just ridiculous. I think if I was your friedn I would be raising Holly Hobb.

That wouldn't fly with me if mcsnet did that to me, it's almost a mockery of sorts, should be fines
for any carrier that inserts themselves into a private matter like that. Over the top intrusive.

I would expect to see this on the news if it's in fact real. That's one hell of an implication that needs to see the light of day.

I can't accept that this is in fact true. I can believe that the OP was told what he was told but I'm more than skeptical that what is being reported is factual.

What next.......send an email to someone wishing them Happy Birthday and Shaw responds with a birthday wish?

Not a believer that this happens. Has to be some other explanation.

Seems strange for sure...but guess what, we are living in a strange world right this minute, and have been way to long now. Hard to tell where the truth and fiction start and end.

If shaw is reading your emails, they aren't going to flaunt it like that.

Considering thousands of emails are sent every second I highly doubt Shaw has the manpower to read all of them, you can't reach them by phone without sitting on hold for a 1/2 hour.

All I know is that he showed me the outgoing email, cc'd to his family members and the email from Shaw this morning.
I do know this. When we had Shaw fibre optic installed at our home last year the service tech informed us that they were able to log on to our smart TV at anytime and use the camera to view whatever was in the cameras range (as well as other things they can do remotely).
The reasoning is that this gives them the ability to trouble shoot many issues you are having without having to send a service tech.
They say 'service'...I say 'spy'.
And I tend to not be a 'tinfoil hat' kinda guy...but this stuff is just getting to obtrusive.

Wonder if it is designed to pick up trigger words like bomb, covid, terrorist etc....I can’t see every email being read by humans. Some kind of program that alerts to certain words?

That’s what I think.
The header on the email sent to family was ‘Uncle ***** Passes from Covid’

IF what you are saying is True.

Then Shaw broke the law.

There are laws in Canada to deal with this.

Tough time proving it though.

But if they did leak any sensitive info and it effected your life negatively you could sue them.

I doubt the validity of this "story" as there are literally millions of emails bouncing around all day.

How different is that from Amazon’s Alexa?
It took Amazon two years to admit that, yes, it is always listening and monitored (by computer algorithm)...and bang the next day ads for what you were discussing with your spouse the previous evening are popping up on your computer.
Watch ‘The Social Dilemma’ on Netflix...it’s scary just what the tech giants are capable of and are doing.
As I said, I’m not really a tin-foil hat kind of guy...but it’s been proven, if you are at all connected there is no such thing as privacy.

Was there some type of joint account, one was canceled due to a death, so the other account received a condolences email?

Of course Alexa is always listening. It has to be in order to function, it's voice activated, otherwise a voice activated device that isn't listening would be like talking to your TV remote. Shaw, Google, Hotmail, etc. do not need to read one's e-mail to transfer the message, anymore than Canada Post has to open your parcel before they deliver it.

I find that hard to believe, as this would and could cause MAJOR liability, credibility, political, social and privacy whistleblower type issues for Shaw .......... I don't understand what they would gain from this ........ makes absolutely zero sense.

I don't believe your friend for one second.
You have no idea about what you’re talking about. I’ve known him for 25 years and his credentials are impeccable...more so than just about everyone on this forum, myself included.
I’m done here...I saw the emails, it is what it is.
He has contacted Shaw...until he hears from them (which I’ll report one way or the other here) say what you will.

Maybe one of those family members works for Shaw and replied on a Corp machine.
Maybe a Shaw dept was on the mailing list that was sent to.
Maybe there was a ‘misunderstanding’ by the friend.
I agree though, doesn’t sound logical

I think we should back off with some of the above accusations,
allow some time for the OP to hear back from his trusted friend..

IF this did happen Shaw would be supplying evidence of breaking the law.

It is illegal for ISP to not safeguard your information....unless it was part of a "criminal investigation".

It's not like they will be going to jail...BUT If the did release "personal" info about you, and you could display that that damaged you either personally, professionally or financially you could sue them.

IF what happened took place I would file a complaint with Officer of Privacy Commission and then hire a lawyer and sue Shaw.

They would likely settle out of court for tidy sum of money.
