Default Arrow Recovery ... What do you use or do?

So I am visiting family on their acreage in Wainwright this weekend. Of course I bring out my bow and target. I finally lost my first arrow that I wasn't able to find. I tried sweeping with another arrow through the long grass. I tried using a rake. Working a grid type search. I was already planning on buying lighted nocks. Now I was just wondering what other people use to help in finding their arrows? I know some people use metal detectors or UV lights. I was told about a type of tape that you put on your arrows that makes a little hand held remote beep when you are close. Anyone ever hear of this or ever use this? How would or does this tape affect the arrows?
Are there any other systems out there?
What works for you?

Default Lost arrows

I went and bought a metal detector on sale at Canadian tire for 100 bucks , works awesome for finding your arrows , at our range I have found mine and several other people's arrows which I leave at the range for the people who ever lost them .

Ya I had to use one last weekend. Shooting at the target at long range and one snaked under the wet grass. Disappeared. Metal detector found it though

Losing arrows in grass is a part of shooting outdoors, may be your first but I will guarantee wont be your last if you shoot actively...

There are arrow Trolls that live in the grass, even if you cut the grass as short as possible the arrows will disappear, them trolls are quick

We have a metal detector for our outdoor range and even then some are never seen again...

Many use Zwicky Judo points for small game for this reason, the spring loaded arms stop arrows from disappearing under the grass, field points and broadheads are bad for that...the most effective aid is bright wraps and vanes, florescent colors, red orange and even white are some of the easiest to find, camo arrows sure look cool, but the trolls like them best!

Of course the best defence is not to miss...but we all do that ...
you will get used to it after the first couple...lol

Lighted nocks will help, but remember, if you care at all about pope and young, the honor code, they don't accept them. I try to practice with what I hunt with and do not use the nocks, although I like them. My luck they would all light up in my quiver when animal looks up at me.

As lost said, metal detector is awesome. Also, it sucks losing the SOBs at 20 bucks a pop, but get used to it, don't get too mad, and nock another one.

Nockturnals, tried many versions and they work the best hands down. Have often spent 20 min looking for an arrow, only to go back out after dark and see it glowing from 70 yards away.

Also, for the arrow you just lost: a lot of fletchings, nocks, and wraps are UV reflective. Grab a black light flashlight, go into a dark room and point it on your arrows. If they glow, you may be able to go out and find it. And you know that deer will see them so you may want to change colors.

The rule of 11,

in archery you can never have a full dozen arrows, you always lose the first one of a dozen fairly rapidly and then after that you always have 11, I call it the rule of 11

Default Arrows

I agree buy 14 arrows gives you the two extra to loose so you can say you have a full dozen still

Haha now its all making sense. My quiver holds 5 arrows and the holder in my bow case holds another 6. Always wondered why.

I found this little metal detector while reading about solutions for finding your arrows.

http://http://www.arrowrecover.com/howitworks.html

Anyone ever try one of these? Seems nice that it's small and portable. Wouldn't take up much room in the back pack.

It's always funny to me how upset I get when I lose an arrow. I mean, I have no troubles shooting my 45/70 at $3.00/trigger pull. And I'm sure there's guys on here paying much more than that for some of their rifles(even if you reload). However when I lose an arrow I paid $15-$20 for three years ago, I get all mad! It's pretty ridiculous! But it happens every time!!

I had no idea P&Y didn't accept lighted nocks! Sure they help with recovery (hopefully humane) but wouldn't help the actual shot. Interesting.

They rescinded that rule a year or two ago, all previous animals taken with lighted nocks are now eligible.

Bow mounted cameras and lighted nocks are allowed. Bow mounted rangefinders and lighted sights are not.

I tried getting my pup to find my arrow. Didn't go over so well. Lol I got her to smell like another arrow and she just looked at me like WTF do you want me to do with that thing haha She's only 7 months old. I'll keep trying though.

Oh sweet. How about live cell Trail Cams Lefty? They were banned also last time I looked. Lumenoks are a def advantage. Wayyyyyy easier to find arrow esp from tree stand down.
Lengthways in grass shooting from ground to ground, ahhhhhhh dang it. Not so much ; )

Cell trail cams are considered to offer unfair advantage, so they are not "P&Y legal"

That's "Mike" we shot arrows 80-100 yards away on purpose into an alphalfa field to test him out, he found them before we could walk the distance.

That's awesome... Training my pup for that right now...early stages but catching on...an arrow finding dog on any outdoor range would be the ultimate...they aren't skeered of no trolls...

This is an unbelievable ruling after ozonics gave PY a bunch of money and they promote this electronic device.

I have no issue with any of this stuff, but I do find it funny that people would want the Ozonicz use to be ineligible for P&Y entries yet everyone and their dog was on here calling it a gimmick and a waste of money. Almost everywhere you go you have the majority of people saying that. I just think it's funny, and also believe it works. Sorry for the derail.

I've never used ozonics and never felt the need for it. I can't comment on it but I have a hard time that ones ruled as an unfair advantage and one is not. Both electronic devices aiding a hunters success. Sorry not trying to derail just 2 cents on that ruling.

The cell cam thing is positioned around the fact that you can sit at home, get a text and then go hunting. They view it like real time surveillance I think. Whereas the ozonics...you set up while you are already hunting. I think that's the reasoning.

Anyone here have experience with ozonics? I am sold on the fact that it tricked a dog, that is not easy to do.
Curious is all.

It doesn't bother me at all anymore ...however ethics dictate that we give our best try to find any arrow ...more so hunting with permission on private or even crown land...

I think I gave up about 40 years ago...back then arrows were hard to find just to buy...I remember buying a brand new dozen of 2216 aluminum arrows...which cost me near $100.00 then...I had build the ultimate target out of tentest fibreboard...4ft by 3ft...on wheels and the back legs acted like wheel barrow handles...

I worked a week getting target and arrows perfect...those first brand new dozen where my pride and joy.....set up target and let fly...target was on too steep an angle and when my 6th arrow struck...the target in slow motion fell forward...snapping all six aluminum's in half...

Walked away in disbelief and never got too attached to another arrow in my life....lol
