Default Deer attractant’s

Question for you guys, I have access to some private land, lots of game but hard to access spots. Has anyone used deer attractants, feed, minerals for pre season to help develop different routes and hot spots for the game. Has it worked? And what brand have you used?
Thanks!

Yeah I understand it’s a very touchy subject for half the people, just curious. It’s a bow zone and they travel through a clearing that’s over 100 yards on either side from any trees so isn’t any way to get close.

Put a blue salt block down and spray some deer urine around.

Bag of apples to help em find the salt.

Remove salt before opener.

Kill the deer that were on trail cam.

No, it’s illegal, plain and simple.

Hunt smarter. There’s always a way to get close.

Not going to touch the salt food attractant conversation but if hunting the rut it’s not hard to get them to move that distance with calls. During early season they will also respond to a communication bleat out of curiosity. Communication bleat is not like using a grunt Or estrus bleat so don’t expect the same response

I don’t know the layout and have not scouted the travel of theses deer to go beyond that too much but odds are I would be considering ground blind options if you don’t think a tree stand is an option

Agreed and have the ground blind in place well in advance of season so the deer can get used to it ...who knows ,a blind in the middle of a passage like that may cause them to alter travel routes and move next to cover ....you aren't gonna win on here with a food attraction post .

I’ll set up a ground blind this week and let it sit till the season so it becomes normal for them to see it. I’ve always mountain hunted and done spot and stalk but the white tail on this property are hard to stalk with a bow in wide open land. Thanks for info!

Being legal in sask I've experimented lots and found the best and cheapest is just plain salt. Deer prefer loose salt worked into the ground over salt blocks. Elk and moose prefer salt blocks. Especially this time of year, come fall they'll slow right down as they dont need it as much.

If you put out attractant, and the neighbour does and so does the other neighbour.. what happens to the natural travel routes? They get messed up, you might not see any deer on your spot at all, it all depends who has the biggest “pile.”

It’s a crappy way to hunt.

Just because there aren’t trees doesn’t mean you can’t hunt from the ground very effectively. I’ve killed the vast majority of my deer off the ground.

Here’s a good video on pit blinds….. they’re deadly. Cheap, easy to make, fast and can be used antwhere that you can dig a hole.

Default Synthetic Attractant

Simple question is this. Are synthetic attractants legal to use. Not asking about salt etc. The liquid stuff that you dip a cotton wick into and hang from a branch or fence etc

If you dont care about the laws, attract them with grain, and shoot them before the season opens.
Or just find out who shot the biggest one and steal theirs.

From the Wildlife Regulations;

Bait - any substance that consists of a food attractant, including mineral and any representation of a food attractant.

Scent that isn’t a food type or tries to replicate a food type is legal. (Doe pee, buck pee etc)

Tinks makes a little jug of doe pee that you just pull open and has a hook to hang off of branches. If your in there after first week in November in a ground blind try rattling. I have also used a doe decoy with some surprising results. ** Check the reg's to make sure they are legal. I only used in Sask.

Scrape out a patch of soil here and there on travel routes, pee on it put up a camera. Deer will come around, the stuff you buy may work but not any better.

Be careful with salt, if it has sat in the rain , and some has dissolved into the soil, you are still hunting over bait. And be sure to pick up any remaining apple parts as well.

And amongst the back and forth with some there will be some great information to take to the field.

Good luck out there.

If your body allows it, get a good backpack, wait for the rut, walk in, and use some doe estrus would be my suggestion....

Maybe try finding a tree that bucks have used as a rub or a fence post that they have rubbed on and move it to this open area? Dig a hole and put it where you like. They will come and check it out as the scent of other deer are already on it

This what I have used for many years for mock scrapes and freshening up other scrapes made by deer.
Tink's® #69 Doe-In-Rut® Buck Lure is 100% natural doe estrous urine collected from live whitetail does during their estrous cycle....
Works like a charm.
