Default Special Limited Season For Crossbow Only.

Seems like many archers have a disdain for the crossbow. That might be a heritage cultural thing, with the Vikings filling there foes so readily with crossbow bolts.
Give the XBow people a couple of weeks for XBow only. What the heck is wrong with that? XBows bunched in with high powered rifles... come on. In an age where the discrimination card is played every five minutes...

Well, we're back at square one. I'm an archer and I love crossbows too. Like one guy said about comparing recurves and longbows. Why decide between Ginger and Marianne when you can have them both.
Another thing I observe is compounds and trads are not equal animals; similar but not congruent. Why the division there? Maybe compounds and XBows are more related than we think. They have some common ground. I don't get the descrimination.

Throw it into the bow season and be done with it.

We could have a season for traditional bows, then one for compounds, then a crossbow season, then a muzzle loader season, then a shotgun season, then a rifle season. Give everyone the chance to use a specific tool, in it's own season. Of course that would greatly complicate the regulations and draws, and then some people would want to use a compound in traditional season, or a crossbow in compound season, because it's easier for them, even further complicating things.

I think crossbows during the archery season would be like when they opened the muzzleloader seasons.... everybody bought an In-Line muzzleloader, thinking they will harvest big bucks in October or before rifle season.....but everybody realized that they didn't get more hunting days, it cost more money and it was the same distance as a traditional muzzle loader (inside 100-150 yards), and within 2-3 years you could buy an In-line muzzleloader for cheap.... I suspect crossbows will be the same, at first "everybody" will buy one, and they are not cheap!, and soon they will find out that they did not get hunting more, because we need to work more to make less these days.... and it is not as easy as they thought, and walking around with a crossbow is a pain in the a2s.... and 2-3 years later they will sell them or keep them collecting dust.
So for me it is, let crossbows in with archery, and just wait 2-3 years and it should be fine. and yes, a late archery season in January is a great idea!!!!

If I have only one whitetail tag or special draw tag does it really make a difference which month or with which weapon I harvest said animal. I am getting my crossbow permit today due to amputations of one leg and a partial amputaion of my other foot. I wont be getting far from the blind. I for one would love a week long muzzle loader season in October. The weather would possibly make for more memorable days than freezing your butt off and hoping to make a cloud of black powder smoke than when it is minus 20 in November.
More choices would mean that if I harvest my critter with bow, crossbow or black powder that I would not be out there during rifle season. That being said I hunt 99% of the time on private land so do not often have the hoards swarming where I hunt.

That's the frickin extreme for sure. It would be alot easier to just include the crossbow into the bow where it belongs; like other provinces and states do.

Now there is somebody who has a bead on some reality based on experience.
I'm all for inclusion too. You just settled it.

Good for you and great attitude! We would all be better off with more of your attitude. Keep it simple and give it a whirl

When did Alberta have a special muzzle loader season? I guess you could count the Camp Wainwright three day hunt, but look what happened there, at first you could draw every year, then people bought scoped inlines, and now it is a multiple year wait. As for Saskatchewan , the season is still there, and scoped inlines are still by far the most popular, and traditional muzzleloaders are scarce.

Jay Massey lived in Alaska, hard core traditional archer, right along side the guys with hand guns and .223AI rifles!

A crossbow has the distinct difference of not needing to be drawn in the presence of the animal. If it belongs anywhere it’s together with shotgun/traditional muzzleloader, which for the most part we don’t have seasons for either.

... and compound bows are a picnic to hold, so they should be in there with them. Always an argument of some kind. Just include them and get it over with.

You came here looking for arguments. There is a world of difference between holding a compound at full draw for a couple minutes and having a crossbow that you cocked when leaving the truck locked into a tripod ready to go. That’s not even considering the skill difference between the two, anyone halfway proficient with a rifle can run a crossbow. Being effective with even the most advanced compounds still takes many hours of practice and upkeep.

You are absolutely correct a compound bow takes a lot more practice and skill and in my opinion is more rewarding. However, we all have a tag to fill regardless of the weapon as has been stated and a crossbow allows our older senior hunters a chance to extend their season, which I believe they deserve. Crossbows should be allowed during bow season, even if for hunter 55 yrs and older.

Why not let older seniors just use a rifle in a bow zone? It's easier.

55 and old? Lol that's still young. God damn why not start at 45 and let 45+ use a rifle in a bow zone?

Ridiculous.

Put crossbows in with muzzle loader, they have about the same range and in my mind pretty equal in difficulty.

There we go again the crossbow haters are picking fights again. Is this where we hurl obscenities at each other? No thanks.

Rediculous is right. It's simply, "I'm special and I want my special acknowledgement."
If the crossbow and muzzle loader are so easy to use, let me shoot an apple off your head?

Once you're proficient with the bow and arrow they are pretty 'easy' to use too.

Nobody is picking a fight. Your first post asked what people thought was wrong with a crossbow season, now you’re getting their opinions. It’s hard to keep track these days but I don’t think disagreeing is illegal just yet.

For the record. I don’t hate crossbows at all, I just don’t think they belong in the archery season. Should I get a week carved out for a special season because I want to hunt with my sharps and not have to compete against a guy running a Nightforce?

We can all layout extreme comparisons. My opinion isn't extreme. I hope one day they change the rule. We won't agree. That's all. "Throw it in with the bow season and be done with it."

there used to be a muzzleloader season in the 100's along the east border. It was the last 2 weeks of October. You still needed your Antlered or Antlerless mule deer draw, not the OTC tag. This overlapped the archery season and bow hunters out with the OTC mule deer tags were hunting at the same time. I loved this season over by Consort.
