A couple years ago I bought a300Wby Vanguard that had never been fired. Got a good deal on it and the main reason I got it was for the scope that was on it, so the rifle didn't owe me what it’s worth. Took the scope off and it sat there. A few days ago I decided to take it out and shoot it. Put an old Burris 3-9x40 scope on it. Loaded a ladder test set of rounds that the Nosler manual said was the most accurate powder in their test rifle. Chose to just shoot 2 shot groups cuz I wasn’t really expecting very good results, and I knew it was going to hit me hard. My hope was that the results would give me an idea of which way to go.
The first 3 rounds were an attempt to zero the scope and were at 82.5gr Bullets are 180gr sst Hornady. The brass showed that it was happy with my load. The next 2 were off the target cuz I moved the adjustment the wrong way and also moved the target to 100yds. The next 2 were at 83.5gr right at the edge of the target. Another adjustment and voila! Max book of 84.5 of imr7828. The primers were just starting to crater at 84.5 so I’ll set my go-to charge at 83.5. Looks like it’s ready to go hunting. Just not by me cuz man does that thing beat me up. Got a headache from the pounding of that 300. Kinda proud of that 300.
Wish I could get my 257bee to shoot that good. It’s super fussy and the best from it isn’t as good as that 300 on its first time out with no previous testing.

I have had good luck with the Vanguards accuracy wise, better than my Mark Vs. And sometimes load development is just that easy, I guess that is just to offset the fussy rifles that take many loads to find one that it likes.

My son in laws vanguard in 270w is fussy, finally got it to 1”, owner said that’s good, he only fires a few rounds a year hunting.
You’re right those wins sure make a guy feel good, gets some genuine satisfaction out of this hobby.
