Default Fishing in Bear country

This is probably an old question on here. But I'm getting to old to run very far,and I'd like to fish in some areas where there may be Grizzlies, all my instincts tell me to steer clear, but I still want to try, what do you guys think?

I carry bear spray, it's effective but has it's limits.

sometimes also a mossberg 12ga full of slugs, but that's more for my own peace of mind. Bear spray and bear bangers both work wonderfully.

Love your saying about the hounds, I've hunted lots with beagles and the baying is hypnotic.

Absolutely hypnotic!
I didn't come up with that saying, haven't found who did.

Noise, and wind...

Make noise and try to walk with the wind.

I fish almost exclusively in bear country, and never leave home without two things:

- bear bangers
- my dog

Make noise - have yet to have an encounter!

Happy fishing

Cheers

Bear spray can help you in situations where there's something provoked, but avoiding that situation is the best thing you can do. Parks Canada has a ton of information posted about how to mitigate bear risks and act in a manor in which they won't be too bothered by your presence, or leave. They also hold information sessions from time to time. I fish in grizzly country most days I'm on the water, and have seen many bears, none of which have given much of a bother.

I fish in grizzly country a lot by myself. I have had two close experiences.

My best advice is to stay in the open and do whatever you can to avoid surprising a bear. It may mean you have to walk a bit further and go out of the way a bit but it will be worth it.

I always carry bear spray in a holster and a small air horn.

Read this Fish Along. It should help you. Alberta's Bear Smart Program manual.
