Question Heading in and out of Calgary Monday during rush hour

I’ve got 2 medical appointments in the U of C area this Monday. So I’ll be driving in and out of the city during both rush hour periods. I haven’t driven in Calgary for at least a decade or possibly two.

Coming in from the south, any suggestions as to the best way(s) to get into and then out of the U of C area? I’m almost considering parking somewhere and then taking a cab to the university.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Stoney - glenmore - crowchild. It’s not terrible going north after downtown.

It’s hard to beat google maps recommended route and estimated eta. I try often but it’s pretty accurate

Check the city's LRT/Transit map and schedule, might work better for you, at least avoids congestion and the challenge of Calgary drivers

I'm in Cochrane and if the weather's bad or I have to come in during regular hours I park at Tuscany station and take the train, takes about as long and less hassle than driving,

Just a thought and something to consider

I always book appointments so I miss rush hours. I'm starting to think nobody works in Calgary because rush hours seem to be all the time.
On Monday Deerfoot was all construction zones . Shaganapi and Glenmore all big parking lots and 16a bumper to bumper.
I time my appointments mid morning and mid afternoon so it's not like people are traveling to and from work.

Another thing is don't use paper maps of Calgary. Even if you buy a new map they all seem outdated.

I would park on the outskirts and take a taxi; no worries about traffic or parking near the appointment. Cab drivers got to eat too.

my youngest son(9) asked me once while he was watching some older movie "Dad, have you ever used a paper map before?".... that sure made me feel old.

But not to derail... i second the suggestion of Stoney-Glenmore-Crowchild. i would avoid deerfoot at all costs, anytime of day due to all of the construction.

You can hardly buy a paper map anymore.

Coming from the south, hop on Stoney West until 16th Ave. It does take you quite west of the hospital buf you will avoid a lot of the traffic.
There are a lot of parking lots available, easy to get in and out of. Just find the one closest to where you're going. It's easy to get turned around there with the +15's and tunnels and such.

I third this! With the south west leg of Stoney open now this will be your least painful route.

This is the way I would go
Take Stoney all the way around to 16th ave and you'll avoid majority of the traffic.

I would do this. I'm working a fair bit down at the South Health Campus doing pretty much the opposite drive as this, starting in the area of the Foothills hospital. The new west portion of the Ring road is seamless, and the fairly short stretch heading from there eastbound along 16th is easy.

It is a longer drive, but would be less stress for you I would think.

Better to be an hour early than be a minute late....Give yourself lots of time. If there is any snow, double your drive time.

The traffic is brutal all the time. They have been working on the Crowfoot Tr since the 1988 Olympics.....lol

Watch your speeds as there are police especially in the, speed reduced areas.

Deerfoot Tr alone is 80km in alot of places...

You will not believe how bad it is in some areas from 10-20 years ago.....

Good luck...

It's been the last years that I've been forced to go to Calgary for medical stuff because everything south of Calgary is second rate at best. But when first started going there and I guess it was a while ago because had to take one of the kids to children's hospital. I found it on my Calgary map but once up there we kept driving around and couldn't find it. Neighborhood looked crappie enough we didn't feel comfortable enough to just park and ask anyone for directions.
So called the hospital. Most of the staff couldn't give directions because they don't drive to work. Apparently take transit or something but I finally got a hold of someone who could give directions.
Apparently the hospital on my map was tore down and the new hospital was miles away on other side of the river.

Same here, especially downtown.

Default We seem to have some consensus

I’m overwhelmed with all of the help. Shout out to the folks on this forum!

Okay Stoney, 16th, then Shaganappi, then university drive. Both my appointments are on university or just a half block away. Unfortunately I didn’t have much choice on the timing as I had to coordinate two specialists in one trip. Fortunately I can walk from one office to the other.

Thanks again 👍🏼

Unless you meant University Avenue, better double check your route.
University Drive comes off Crowchild Trail and runs up the west side of McMahon Stadium.

Stoney, 16th, crowchild. Just depends on what buildings as to what turn you take from there.

When you refuse to give your roads numbers, some of the names are going to overlap eventually...

Stony to 16, or to Sarcee, onto 16. I’d stay off of Crowchild.

Default I made it, thanks to all

Stoney to 16th to Shaganappi to University avenue was a breeze going in and out. No snags going either way. Just a couple slower areas on 16th but nothing stopping traffic at all. I even got to my first appointment about 30 minutes early.

Thanks for the tips! Without those I probably would have followed my maps app directions and it had me going a completely different route.
