270 Win COAL

Question for all you reloaders, I'm loading a Nosler 130 gr ballistic tip and I measured my coal in my Browning X-Bolt with the cleaning rod method 3 times (measured to the lands) and came up with 3.47". The Nosler book gives me a coal of 3.34 which would give me .13" leade which is very exsessive. If I load .020 less than max length the bullet still fits in the magazine and cycles properly but just looks odd. Has anyone else ran across this issue??

I would just start at what Nosler tells you for oal, 3.320 for 130gr ballistics. After you get your powder charge worked out for you best groups, then play with OAL.
But that’s just me.

If they function in the magazine, and I still have adequate bullet shank in the case neck, I start .010" off of the lands. You should have no problems starting .020" off of the lands.

Satisfy these parameters in this order.

1. Does the OAL allow functioning from the magazine without jamming the bullet into the leade.

2. Seat conventional cup core bullets about 10 thousandths of an inch from the leade. ( follow manuf. recommendations on monolithic designs)

3.Monkey with OAL.

Every chamber has a different leade measurement, COAL from any rifle but your own means pretty much nothing. I wish the manuals indicated the jump to the leade measurement instead.
