Burbots Buck 2024
A 2 year quest was brought to a close this past weekend. Summer 2023 I caught a glimpse of promising Whitetail. Last fall I put in a solid effort but only ever caught him on a trail cam and ended up giving up my pursuit of him, taking a smaller buck. A sighting this October gave me proof of life and I decided to go all in after catching him Nov 1 on a trail cam. My home for this pursuit was the blind I shared in this thread.

15 days and 50+ plus hours and I was close to giving up. Saturday the 16th I skipped the evening hunt and went into Calgary to have dinner with the kids, Murphy’s law the next day I pulled the card from the trail cam in front on my blind and there he was…. At 430pm… I had almost taken a smaller buck the morning of the 17th prior to pulling the card….. I was rejuvenated and headed right back out. 230 pm and my efforts were rewarded as he came into view. The little 7.62X39 barked and the buck made it only 30 yards. I Was awash in emotions with the effort paying off on this special animal

This was my first Deer with the little 7.62X39. At the shot the deer went over a small rise and I lost sight of him. I saw him kick at the shot before taking a few strides out of view. As I walked over to where I hit him there were some doubts and fears in my mind as to the effectiveness of the round. At the impact site there was no blood at all and my heart dropped. A short trail in the dry leaves led to him expired in the nearby willows. Fear turned to elation. The shot was a high double lung shot exiting the deer. On field dressing the lungs were destroyed and the chest cavity filled with blood. I was happy with the performance (80 yards) and thanks to those who gave opinions on my Soviet vs Swede thread

After field dressing I drug him back up to where I hit him, I just realized in the picture you can see the blind where the shot was taken from in the top right corner

Thank you, I was excited to share it with this group. I have been a member a long time and guilty of not participating/sharing as much as I could.
Proud to share this one

Nice work! What bullet was used in the 762x39?

Thank you! Factory Remington 125gr Core Lokt. I was comfortable with load as the maximum potential shot at my blind location was 100 yards. Being seated and with a rest bullet placement was not a concern.
