Good mountain rifle
I was looking for a good mountain rifle
Preferably something with enough power to stop a big bear
Also have a reloading bench set up at home to make some more snappy rounds

Bullet selection can turn most mountain rifles into bear defense rifles

Tikka/Sako chambered in .270 through 300 wm, or if you’re looking for a practical rifle with open sights, the Marlin guide gun chambered in 444 or 45-70 would work great!

I would have a hard time calling a Marlin 444 or 45-70 a mountain gun! Brush gun, bear gun for sure. They a range limited and generally have low power or no optics. Any quality lighter weight rifle 270, 7mm - 30 cal and up is suitable for bears if stoked with deep penetrating bullets like TSX/TTSX, Partitions or bonded bullets. The owner/ operator needs to capable of doing his part too.

This will cost you more than just selling your Vanguard and buying a new rifle.
For a "mountain rifle" you want a balance of weight and power. A short mag has covers the power part while letting you shave some weight with a shorter action length, so don't knock it before you try.

Many swear by the 338, apparently it’s an amazing hunting round, however it may be more cost effective to purchase new! Couple of phone calls will answer that!

Beat me to it. In the TI as well. That will be a mountain rifle that shoots as good as it looks

Vanguards are a great gun for the money, but a little heavy to be considered a mountain rifle

A short action will knock maybe an ounce or two off a rifle, certainly not the entire answer!

https://weatherby.com/338-rpm/
The 20” barrelled version would be nice to pack in the hills
