what cartridge should I have built with a standard action model 70.
Well the 27 Nosler idea is out as i did not do enough research and my donor action wont work. it is a Model 70 chambered in 270 Win currently
So that opens it up... With what I already have I was thinking of the following but am open to suggestions as well I want something over 3200 fps or faster
from 6mm to 7mm.
Some of things I am thinking of are
6mm -06AI
6mm-280AI
280 AI
I have a 270 WSM and 300 WSM, which is why i am looking for 6mm

25-06, or 6.5-06 would be worth considering.

im with elk on this one. 6.5-06 could be a cartridge that could check the boxes for you.

240 Weatherby would be an option as well, would give you something with factory cases available.

I've always felt that a 6.5-06 would be an excellent, fairly low recoiling round.

I have owned dozens of 6.5 rifles using the " standard "
( 308 sized) case head , most were fantastic.
The 6.5/06 was one of the best and would do another in a heart beat.
Going up to 7mm, I really like the 280 Remington and the 280AI

Why change anything. What are you expecting to gain?

Probably something different, not necessarily better

It will hold 5 down, feed like it should and with 117gr hammers will get 3200fps.
You could throw a 26” barrel on it, a Bansner Miller stock, and Sunny hill bottom metal.

If you’re dead set on that 3200 as a minimum velocity it’s going to limit your choices. A couple of the 6.5s would in the right barrel length, or the 280 AI but you will need to stick to lighter bullets.

Keep the 270 win and use 110 grain bullets. With MRP powder I’ve gotten 3400 FPS.

I'd stick to the 270 myself. Given your cartridge stable though I'd go 338-06 or 35 Whelen but you won't meet your velocity goal with either.. 6.5-06 is the only " change" that would make sense and meet your velocity requirements but candidly it won't do anything better than your two chamberings you already have.

I guess that really depends on your intended use of the rifle, and which bullet you would like to shoot.
Hunting with monos, speed is your friend. Go 240wby.
Hunting with bonded 6.5-06, 6.5-284 norma.
280ai is a good option if you prefer slower C&C style bullets.
At the speeds you mentioned I think the 6.5s will land right where you wanted.

The 6.5 RPM is pretty zippy as well. Sounds like what the OP is looking for

Doesn’t the 270 wsm get you there? My vote is also 338-06

Cartridges are like opinions, everyone has one. I think the 25-06 was mentioned and a great option. 6mm creedmoor would be cool too.
Don’t let us on here tell you what to get though, do what peaks your interest! That’s what I’m doing for my rifle build. But also, if what you have works, keep no need to fix it unless you wanna do some tinkering!

You are looking for something over 3200 fps in a capable hunting round correct?

For me the answer would be simple 6mm creedmoor, I have one but it's a full blown bench rifle that weights in at just over 19 lbs. I'm thinking about getting one in a hunting rifle and use it for coyotes
