Default Early Season Tactics

Heading east central next week and plan to hit a stream or two. Looking for any early season tactics and patterns. Thanks

Good chance you'll see skwalas, if nymphing is your game skwalas should produce, may find some top water action.

x 2 on skwala nymphs. Also smaller stoneflies, lots of winter stones around. The trusty san juan worm will catch a few whitefish to keep things interesting and I even get a brown every now and again with it.

Also streamers, swinging a woolly bugger has been producing lately!

Still a bit early to see a skwala hatch..
Need a stretch of warm weather.
Typically see them mid May in east central.

Agreed it's early for Skwala, they do tend to be a short hatch though. The Black Stonefly and March Brown hatch is much more prolific and lasts longer.

In springtime small frog or tadpole sinking flies can be good too.

Little black stonefly nymph if you want numbers

Muddler or bow River bugger swung slow and deep if you want size.

I’d be inclined to swing the streamers all day, April is usually single digit catches, may as well make em count. Plus you don’t have to worry about heat stress or oxygen concentration.
